Soccer community outraged by Italian club Napoli’s ‘racist’ TikTok about own player
September 27, 2023

Italian club Napoli have had a torrid start to the 2023/2024 Serie A season. The current league champions are sitting seventh in the table after picking up two wins, two losses and one draw. Fans aren’t exactly happy with what they’ve been seeing on the pitch and have made their feelings known both in the stadium and on social media.

The team’s TikTok account also seems to be frustrated with the team’s recent performances and has posted a series of extremely controversial videos which seem to attack last season’s top scorer, Victor Osimhen. In fact, despite scoring three goals in six games, the Nigerian seems to have become the scapegoat for the team’s onfield issues.

Napoli mock Osimhen’s penalty miss on TikTok:

Napoli’s TikTok admin mocks Osimhen’s penalty miss

Napoli have posted two videos which appear to mock the striker. In the first, Osimhen can be seen pleading for a penalty in the team’s recent draw against Girona before missing the spot kick. It’s accompanied by a sped up voiceover which says “gimme penalty please”.

Racist TikTok directed at own player

The second video is even more controversial, with many labelling it as ‘overtly racist’. In the clip, the admin appears to compare Osimhen to a coconut. “I’m not a boy, I’m not girl… I’m a coconut” are the lyrics of the song chosen to accompany the video in which the fruit is superimposed over the striker’s face.

Legal action looking likely

Osimhen’s agent wasn’t Roberto Calenda assured that he and his client will likely take legal action: “What happened today on Napoli’s official TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted. A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news. We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor.”
