The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos this week:
- Bravo to the Jamestown High School boys’ soccer team, which is competing at the North Dakota State Boys’ Soccer Tournament this week in Bismarck.
- Bravo to the inductees into the University of Jamestown Athletic Hall of Fame. Kevin Heyer, Eric Dirk, Dustin Erbes, Shea Gaier, the 1972 men’s track-and-field team and the 2005 women’s soccer squad received the honor during homecoming activities last weekend.
- Bravo to the official opening on Friday, Oct. 6, of the Applied Digital Pickleball Courts, located outside of the Two Rivers Activity Center. Six courts are available for outdoor play.
- Bravo to Barbara Schlecht and Rhonda Ravely, breast cancer survivors, who shared their stories about their journeys with The Jamestown Sun last week. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
- Bravo to volunteers who have stepped up to serve meals to students at Jamestown Middle School, which has a shortge of employees in food service. The volunteers include employees from the University of Jamestown, Gate City Bank and First Community Credit Union.
- Bravo to Dwight Hofmann, who received the North Dakota Driver of the Year award from the Dakota Transit Association at the group’s fall conference on Sept. 16 in Minot. Hofmann has been a driver for eight years with James River Senior Center and Public Transit in Jamestown. The center’s executive director, Maureen Wegenke, said Hofmann frequently puts in overtime, figures out his overtime hours and then donates that amount to the transit.
- Bravo to our local first responders for “answering the call” to serve their communities. The Jamestown Sun featured the stories of five first responders in its annual “Answering the Call” special section that was distributed on Oct. 7: Maj. Damian Hoyt of the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office; John Rose, a part-time officer of the Jamestown Police Department; Amanda Hecker, firefighter for the Jamestown Fire Department and paramedic for Jamestown Area Ambulance; and Jack Meikle and Kim Schrenk, firefighters with the Jamestown Rural Fire Department. We appreciate first responders’ willingness to serve their communities.
- Bravo to the groundbreaking at the University of Jamestown during homecoming activities for projects on the campus. The event was held for the renovation of Voorhees Chapel and to kick off construction of a new addition that will become the Reuben and Clarice Liechty Center for Faith and Life and will house the Unruh School of Character in Leadership.
