Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, has officially unveiled the trophy for the continent’s newest flagship competition, the African Football League.

Today, 20 October 2023, marks the beginning of a new era in African club competition as its newest, and most lucrative, tournament is set to begin.
The AFL will kick off in Tanzania when Simba SC take on record Egyptian champions Al Ahly at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium at 17:00.
Prior to the contest starting, however, CAF held a press conference, and the former Mamelodi Sundowns chairman unveiled the trophy that will be held aloft by the winners on 11 November.
This will be the first edition of the competition and Wydad Athletic, Esperance de Tunis, TP Mazembe, Enyimba and Petro de Luanda, alongside Sundowns, are the other clubs who will be taking to the pitch this weekend as they also look to take a step towards becoming its inaugural champions.
While this iteration of the tournament only has eight participants, the South African executive did insist that the African institution still plans to introduce a 24-team tournament, which was originally mooted by himself and FIFA president Gianni Infantino when it was first announced in late 2022.

Concerning the opening match, this will be the third time Ahly will travel to Dar es Salaam to take on the Reds of Msimbazi as they look for their first victory over Simba, having been defeated by them 1-0 on their two previous visits.
