After Connecticut College’s men’s soccer team played Franklin and Marshall to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods in the second round of NCAA action Nov. 11, it took seven rounds of penalty kicks before Conn’s Jake Creus ’24 put the game away for good. The Camels, who won the 2021 NCAA DIII Championship, will now head to the Sweet 16 this weekend.
After both teams failed to put the ball in the net during the first half of the game, Creus scored with just 12 minutes to go in the regulation to put the Camels up 1-0. But the Diplomats answered a few minutes later, and the game remained tied after two overtime periods, sending the game to penalty kicks.
Both teams were perfect for six rounds of PKs, with the kicks becoming a sudden victory situation after the fifth round. But in the seventh round, Conn goalie Peter Silvester ’25 saved a shot by Franklin and Marshall’s Oscar Horwitz, setting the stage for Creus, who buried his shot in the left corner to send the Camels through.
In the opening round, Conn beat Denison 3-1 in overtime. Jack Marvel ’24 scored Conn’s only goal in regulation, while Elliot Spatz ’26 and Dylan Zane ’24 both scored on penalty kicks during the overtime periods.
The Camels, now 12-1-6, will next face Montclair State University at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The game will be broadcast live here.
