MEDFORD, Mass. — The Washington and Lee men’s soccer team won a penalty-kick shootout to beat 16th-ranked Colorado College in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal Sunday.
The Generals (15-4-5) earned a berth in the final four, which will be held Dec. 1 at Roanoke College. W&L will play Amherst at 6:30 p.m. Washington College will meet St. Olaf in the 3 p.m. semifinal.
W&L and Colorado (16-4-3) both failed to score in regulation and in the two overtime periods. Will Joseph had three saves for W&L.
W&L won the shootout 5-4.
Each team missed its first penalty kick. W&L’s Willy Hall and Colorado’s Jack Hilliard then each scored. W&L’s Dmitri Tulloch and Colorado’s Curtis Hale each scored in the third round. W&L’s Lucas Pleasants and Colorado’s Alex Meyerhoff scored in the fourth round. Weyimi Agbeyegbe of W&L and Alexander Ward of Colorado scored in the fifth round.

After W&L’s PJ Ryan scored on W&L’s sixth penalty kick, Colorado’s Rex Karjian missed his kick to end the shootout and the game.

UVa 2, FIU 1, OT
UVa reserve Leo Afonso scored on an overhead kick in the fourth minute of the first overtime period to give 11th-ranked and No. 7 overall seed Virginia (11-3-4) a win over Florida International (10-5-4) in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament Sunday in Charlottesville.
Afonso scored his first goal of the game in the 35th minute. Joao Domingues tied the game in the 40th minute.
UVa, which had a first-round bye, won an NCAA tournament game for the first time since 2019.
In other tournament action, James Madison won 1-0 at No. 4 overall seed Georgetown on Sunday.

Leandra Mangual Duran had 14 kills Sunday to lead the Hokies (13-14, 3-3 ACC) to a 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-11 win over the Demon Deacons (17-11, 8-9) in Blacksburg.
