When Erik ten Hag first signed for the Red Devils in 2022, it was alleged that one of the players he wished to bring to Old Trafford more than anybody else was Frenkie de Jong.
The Catalan giants were still deep within their financial crisis, and with the Dutchman understood to be one of the club’s highest earners, the Spanish outfit wanted to alleviate the burden he put on their wage structure by selling him to the Mancunian giants.
Fast forward two years, and the 27-year-old is still in Catalonia. New Barca head coach Hansi Flick views him as an important player, and the club want to keep him as well, as it is believed they want to give him a new deal.

One of the reasons why his wages are so high is because he is being paid the money that the club deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic.
His existing deal expires in 2026, and the same report states that the Blaugrana are worried that the midfielder will leave for free.
The relationship between the Arkel native and Barca is said to be strained at the moment, and that is because the Spanish giants tried to force him to sign with the record Premier League champions, which is why negotiations are so delicate.
