Vengan had only recently celebrated his birthday on January 13, having turned 74, looking on with hope for the new year. He received an outpouring of wishes from family, friends and community members.

The Amanzimtoti resident was honoured as an ‘Unsung Hero’ last year for his immense contributions to bringing non-racialism into South African sport.

In a memoir, which he shared last year, he provided a glimpse into his life, his work and his dedication to activism and sport.

Born in Clairwood, Vengan’s family moved to Isipingo Rail, where he worked as a senior credit controller in a career spanning 30 years. When his beloved father passed on, he joined the existing family business as a director alongside his brothers.

He was a passionate sportsman, having played soccer, darts and squash before becoming an administrator.

In his memoir he stated, “I was privileged to have developed and produced successful administrators, coaches, players and referees who had represented Isipingo at the highest level. I entered the sports and civic administration sphere at a time of segregation, discrimination and lack of proper sporting facilities. I have had the opportunity to serve in a variety of sporting and civic organisations, including the South African Football Association Southern Natal Soccer Board, Isipingo District Football Association, the Mid-South Coast Football Association, the Isipingo Ratepayers Association, and the South Coast Indian District Football Association and Charitable Trust, to name a few.”

In 2017, Vengan was a founding member of the Isipingo Soccer Legends, which attracted 300 former professional players, bringing great sportsmanship to celebrate the glory days of local football. He was later a founding member of the Isipingo Junior Soccer Academy, which served to keep children in sport, maintain discipline and develop future stars.

His brother Nelson Vengan said, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved soccer legend, Ronnie Vengan. Vengan was not just a stalwart in the soccer community, but a visionary who dedicated his life to nurturing young talent and promoting the beautiful game in Isipingo. His unwavering commitment, passion for soccer, and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on countless young players and the community as a whole. His contributions will never be forgotten and his memory will continue to inspire future generations.”

Minesha Singh, the chairlady of the Isipingo Junior Soccer Academy, also offered her heartfelt tribute, “As a leader, mentor, and friend, he embodied the spirit of unity and perseverance, inspiring many to pursue their dreams both on and off the field. His legacy will forever be etched in the heart of the academy and the broader soccer fraternity. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

South African Football Association: Isipingo Sports Against Crime chairperson, Beaver Shanmogum, offered his condolences to the bereaved: “Today we fly our SAFA/ISAC flag half mast. The world was robbed of a true legend. A man of stature, thank you for your time on earth and thank you for bringing unity to South African football. Your unwavering support for local sport will not go unnoticed.”

Vengan’s funeral service will take place on January 19 at the Clare Estate Crematorium Hall from 13:00 to 16:00.
