Miguel Cardoso gives Williams update ahead of Chiefs tie
February 27, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has provided an update on the recovery of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams ahead of the clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

Williams has not featured for Sundowns after suffering a minor injury in the 1-0 defeat by TS Galaxy earlier this month. Denis Onyango and as well as Jody February have been in goals for ‘Masandawana’ for the past four matches.

Sundowns will clash with Amakhosi in a sold-out Betway Premiership match on Saturday, 1 March at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Tshwane.

This fixture marks their second league encounter this season. In the first round, Sundowns secured a 2-1 victory at FNB Stadium in Soweto,

Bafana Ba Style are currently facing uncertainty regarding the availability of goalkeeper Williams, a key player instrumental to their success since joining the club from rivals SuperSport United.

Cardoso said they are awaiting updates from the medical team to determine if the Bafana Bafana captain will be fit to feature on Saturday.

WHAT IS THE LATEST REGARDING THE LATEST WITH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS NUMBER KEEPER RONWEN WILLIAMS?

“Regarding Ronwen [Williams] we don’t know when he will come back. We are hoping very quickly,” said Cardoso after Sundowns 4-2 win over Sekhukhune United on Wednesday in the league.

“But at the moment I am waiting for something from the management. Today is a match day and I don’t usually worry about players that are not on the list. So we hope that he comes back as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, the Tshwane giants gaffer expressed his delight with the return of Khuliso Mudau, who had missed seven games due to an injury.

The former Black Leopards defender replaced Morena at the start of the second half of their match against ‘Babina Noko’.

MIGUEL CARDOSO HAPPY WITH KHULISO MUDAU’S RETURN

“We lost both Morena and Mudau the last time we were here [at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium against Magesi FC], and they both had a period of recovery under our medical department that did very well,” he stated.

“We had Thapelo in the last three matches, he has been playing but with a little bit of risk. Last game, I took him out as quickly as I could.

“This game at half-time, I felt it was important to manage him. He is not injured, he had that little bit of extra fatigue and discomfort. I could not risk him.

“So, we put Mudau to give him minutes. I’m happy that he came back because it’s a sign that he’s healthy. Football players should be healthy to do what they want and for us to manage the games in the right way.”
