March 8, 2025

Donald Trump made an awkward blunder when the U.S. President seemed to confuse the FIFA Club World Cup with the prestigious FIFA World Cup during an unexpected press conference.

On Friday, Trump was all smiles as he declared the formation of a task force for next year’s much-anticipated World Cup set to take place on American soil. With FIFA President Gianni Infantino by his side, Trump enthusiastically discussed the newly introduced 32-team Club World Cup as well as next year’s international tournament.

Yet, in a regrettable slip-up, the 78-year-old seemed to mistake the newly unveiled Club World Cup trophy for the celebrated FIFA World Cup Trophy, renowned globally as the ultimate accolade in football. The blunder occurred after Infantino unveiled showcased the design of the new Club World Cup Trophy in a bizarre scenario.

Rolling up their sleeves for the grand return of the world-class football showdown to Stateside, President Trump penned an executive order putting together a White House Task Force dedicated to the 2026 event. “We’re going to be establishing a very important task force and that’s on the FIFA World Cup of 2026, which as you know is a big event. It’s going to be the biggest event, I think,” Trump declared to the press pack, before tagging in FIFA boss Infantino. “Everybody knows this man to my right, he’s sort of the king of soccer, I guess.

“He was the one that was able to give it to us and we’re going to do a fantastic job in making you at home.”

The global tournament is set to sweep across 16 cities in the trio of North American hosts, promising a bumper $40 billion economic windfall. In the lead-up, it’s touted that more than 200,000 jobs will spring up.

Trump tossed in his own take: “It’s like three Super Bowls a day for a month,” remarking, “That’s a lot.”
