CHICAGO, Ill. — The University of Chicago men’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win over MSOE.
UChicago came out of the gates in a fury with five shots in the first 20 minutes of the game, and they would outshoot MSOE 9-1 in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, MSOE had a pair of chances early of opening minutes of the half, but the UChicago defense remained stout and kept the Raiders of the board.
The Maroons finally broke through in the 77th minute when a handball by the Raiders gave UChicago a chance for the game-winner from the spot. Evan Kanellos confidently took the ball and buried the penalty kick winner in the bottom left corner for the 1-0 lead. The game-winning goal was the third goal of his career and the second game-winning goal of his career.
The Raiders would have two more chances in the final ten minutes of the match, but Ali Alamery was able to conserve his second consecutive clean sheet and extend the UChicago shutout streak to 243 consecutive minutes.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 1-1-1 on the season. UChicago will return to action on Wednesday, September 10 at 7 PM CT as they travel to Wheaton (IL) to take on the Thunder.
