LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team closed out Liberty, 3-1, after two goals in the second half at Osborne Stadium on Friday night. Steven Hernandez recorded his second brace of the season with Arnaud Tattevin picking up a goal and an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started out even as both sides felt the other out. Then in the 15th minute of action a defensive lapse by a Liberty defender allowed a pass from Sami Lachekar to a streaking Hernandez who buried a shot past the keeper to go up 1-0. The half saw a continued Spartans’ attack with four additional shots in the half but all off the mark. In the 37th minute, the Flames went on the counterattack after a blocked UNCG shot and drove down the pitch uncontested and tied up the score at one apiece to go into halftime.
Coming out of the break, both teams’ defenses showed up, not allowing a shot until the 50th minute. Ten minutes later in the 60th minute, Julien Le Bourdoulous sent in a free kick that found the feet of Tattevin and slotted a shot past the keeper to give UNCG the lead back. The Spartans’ offense continued to bring the pressure and in the 71st minute they struck. Hernandez received a beautiful pass from Tattevin in the box and squared up a shot past the goalkeeper to get the much-needed insurance and put the game out of reach at 3-1. Seth Wilson made a crucial save in the 74th minute to deny any momentum from the Flames as the UNCG defense buckled down to end the match.
“It was a good result on the road,” said Head Coach Chris Rich. “We had a rough first half and came out a bit lethargic, but the guys came out in the second half and responded brilliantly. They dominated play and I am happy to head back to Greensboro with a win.”
