It seems another crisis has arisen in Africa’s newest club competition. North African giants Wydad Athletic were poised to host Nigeria’s Enyimba on Wednesday night as they look to build on their 1-0 first-leg victory, but in the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Peoples’ Elephants were forced to return to Lagos.
In an official statement released by the club, the west African side revealed that their plane returned to Murtala Muhammed International Airport after being denied entry into Morocco after spending six hours in the air trying to attain permission to land.
“The Enyimba FC contingent didn’t make the trip to Casablanca as earlier scheduled after the Moroccan Authorities failed to issue a landed permit for a chartered aircraft from the Murtala Mohammed International airport,” the two-time CAF Champions League winners posted on their official Facebook page.
“As at 00.30AM, the team has returned back to a hotel having spent 6 hours and 30 mins in the chartered aircraft awaiting landing permit from the Moroccan authorities for it to take off.”
It is another setback for the side who already face an uphill battle in trying to overturn their first-leg deficit in Casablanca.
Yahya Jabrane gave Wydad the advantage from the spot during their initial encounter, and having been defeated in their last trip to the Stade Mohamed V, many are tipping Adil Ramzi’s men to finish the job in the return fixture.

CAF have since confirmed that the match between the two sides has been moved to Thursday evening, seemingly in light of the events which transpired for Enyimba.
