Bay FC soccer game makes history with new attendance record of 40,000 people at SF’s Oracle Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — History was made Saturday in San Francisco when Bay FC took the field at Oracle Park.

The match against the Washington Spirit set an attendance record with thousands filling the stands.

Fans who spoke to ABC7 News reporter Tara Campbell said this was a special moment for women’s sports.

“We were just talking about how big this got. Probably because it’s at this ballpark. But still I love to see people supporting women’s sports,” Morgan from Alameda.

The crowd of more 40,000 surpassed the previous record set by Bay FC and the Chicago Stars back last year.

“We’ve been losing teams left and right. So it’s really special to have this sort of attendance. I just want that back again,” Hashimoto said.

The record-setting match drawing fans from across the Bay Area.

“I think it’s great. I think it’s really important for us to have teams to support, teams left to support here on the Bay. So, I think it’s awesome to see the turnout here today,” said Winnie Chen, Oakland resident.

The match also marked the first time in the ballpark’s history that a women’s soccer game has taken center stage.

“Soccer isn’t a sport that’s promoted so much and for it to be women’s soccer, it’s amazing, and we’re just here to love and support,” said Janelle.

Kearee Frank of San Francisco said, “It’s crazy to see how many people are out here. It’s all so exciting and just good to see people supporting again, women’s sports, especially with the Valkyries being here as well.”

And despite a loss, these fans still have plenty to cheer about.

“It was my first time at Oracle Park. It was awesome. We’re in, like, the 108 section. It was a great game. As a women’s soccer player myself, it was really, really cool,” said Caroline Keenan, San Francisco resident.
