Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed what he “generally doesn’t like” about teams in the PSL.
The Portuguese tactician has been in South Africa for more than two months now having taken charge of the Brazilians in December, replacing Manqoba Mngqithi.
The 52-year-old coach wasted no time in making his mark. He’s already racked up 17 wins from 21 matches in all competitions. The other four games resulted in two draws and two losses.
Masandawana are at the summit of the Betway Premiership standings with 54 points from 20 matches so far.
Sharing his impression of the PSL, Sundowns gaffer noted his admiration for the level of competition in the league while also stating he “doesn’t like how teams play”, without elaborating on his specific dislikes.
CARDOSO OPENS UP ABOUT COMPETITION IN THE PSL
“We don’t have to make players believe that they are more [better] than the other ones [of other teams] because they are not,” said Cardoso on Thursday’ media open day prior to the Kaizer Chiefs’ clash.
“The teams here are very, very competitive, it’s not the way they play because if you ask me, if I like the way how the teams play, I don’t like them, generally I don’t like them.
“But they compete very well. This is honesty, this is acceptable and I respect it a lot, the teams that compete very well.
“So, when you go to play whatever match it is, respect the opponents because they will compete hard. As a coach you need to be aware of that [the opponents will fight] and not relax so that the players don’t relax too.
“So, football here is interesting because of that, teams are very honest in the way they want to show themselves.
“And playing Sundowns also gives them extra energy because we see other matches, things are not exactly like that. So, sometimes it’s very difficult to analyse the opponents.
“It’s very interesting to see how the teams are ambitious in the way they approach the games and that is good for the development of football and players in South Africa.”
