Kaizer Chiefs continued their preparations for the new season with a 4-0 defeat to Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht on Friday afternoon.
Flavio da Silva was joined in the attack by Glody Lilepo and Mduduzi Shabalala, while new signings Nkanyiso Shinga and Thabiso Monyane started at left-back and right-back respectively.
The Dutch side enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages, which resulted in the opening goal after six minutes when Siebe Horemans slotted home from close range after Chiefs failed to deal with a set-piece.
That proved to be the trend for most of the first half, with Utrecht dominating the possession although they were finding it tough to break down the Soweto giants defence in open play.
Chiefs, meanwhile, had to wait until the 35th minute for their first real opening when Shabalala broke free down the left flank, but the skilful winger saw his effort palmed away by the Utrecht shot-stopper.
After conceding early in the first half, the Soweto giants conceded early in the second after the Dutch side doubled their lead two minutes in thanks to Adrian Blake’s first-time finish from the edge of the box.
Chiefs, however, were a lot more sluggish in the ball in the early stages of the second half as they struggled to get of their own half, while Utrecht bagged a third goal on 55 minutes as Blake completed his brace.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi responded by ringing the changes for the final 30 minutes by changing the entire time to see out the rest of the clash, which included a return to action for Ashley du Preez and Pule Mmodi, who did not feature against Vitesse.
Utrecht would go on to bag a fourth goal with eight minutes left on the clock as Miliano Jonathans was slipped through on goal by a neat through-ball and he showed the composure to slot past substitute goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.
Chiefs will be back in action Saturday against NEC Nijmegen.
