Ex-AS FAR coach explains why they slipped under Nabi
April 4, 2025

Ex-AS FAR Rabat coach Jamil Benouahi has explained why the army side slipped under Nasreddine Nabi last season. The Tunisian coach spent the 2023/24 campaign with AS FAR before making a high-profile move to Kaizer Chiefs in July 2024.

During his time with AS FAR, Nabi missed out on the Botola Pro 1 title with just one point as Raja Casablanca won the league. Raja, which was coached by former Orlando Pirates coaches Josef Zinnbauer and Fadlu Davids, collected 72 points to win the league while AS FAR finished as runners-up with 71 points.

Meanwhile, Nabi also lost in the final of the Throne Cup against Raja Casablanca to finish the season without silverware. Before the arrival of the 59-year-old, the Militarians won the league title in the 2022/23 season.

JAMIL BENOUAHI SAYS AS FAR PLAYERS WERE NOT MENTALLY STRONG

Benouahi, who worked at AS FAR as an assistant coach after Nabi’s spell, has explained why the team missed out on top honours.

“Look, when Nabi came to AS FAR, this team was very good and very mature. He came to the team that won the league a season before and qualified for the CAF Champions League,” Benouahi told FARPost.

“That’s why I say, sometimes it’s a mentality thing because his team lost everything in the last few games, in the previous season. If I have to say this, it means the team was not strong enough mentally, that’s what I saw when I was outside before working for the team. You cannot lose two competitions in two weeks.”

Nabi has been tasked with turning around Amakhosi’s fortunes after a decade-long trophy drought. After 23 games, Chiefs are sitting eighth on the league table with 29 points. They won eight matches, drew five, and lost 10 times.
