FORMER Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Jimmy Tau uses his platform to inspire the next generation of footballers.
Now a respected SuperSport football analyst and ambassador, the 44-year-old Soweto-born legend has opened about life after soccer and the importance of building a future beyond the pitch.
In a recent interview with Daily Sun, Tau emphasised that every young player must take responsibility for crafting their own journey.
“I think it’s important for every man to carve out their own path in life. You can only take the positives and negatives from those you look up to. No one is perfect. We’re all human, but the good traits you see in others, you should plug into your own life. That can help you grow as a person and improve your craft,” he said.
Tau began his professional journey with Basotho Tigers in the 1999/2000 Vodacom League season, rising through the ranks of semi-professional football.

His talent earned him a spot at Soweto giants Pirates ahead of the 2002/2003 season where he made an immediate impact, helping the Buccaneers win the league that year.
He later became a fan favourite at rivals Chiefs, cementing his legacy at both of South Africa’s most iconic football clubs.
As someone who successfully transitioned into broadcasting and business after retiring from the game, Tau believes preparation for life beyond football is just as important as success on the field.
“In life, we all have choices. The decisions you make now will shape your future for better or worse. It’s about taking your craft seriously, having discipline, and planning carefully for life after football. Whether you stay in the game in another role or move into a new space, you need a solid plan.”
With a strong message grounded in personal experience, Tau reminds young athletes that while football may be their passion, their purpose extends far beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch.
