In May 2024, after winning the continental showpiece’s most prolific scorer award in Ivory Coast, world football’s governing body decided to ban Equatorial Guinea’s Emilio Nsue. FIFA stated that the central African side’s captain had violated eligibility protocol and would subsequently be unsanctioned for six months.

It was the second time Nsue had been charged with violating FIFA eligibility rules, after the first instance took place in 2013. The 35-year-old breached the rules and was subsequently unable to play his nation’s matches since the verdict was delivered, but now it seems that his situation is close to changing.

Now, according to AfricaSoccer.com, the Swiss-based body has approved the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation’s (FEGUIFUT) request for the veteran’s change of association, and he will now be able to represent the Nzalang Nacional again.

Nsue was handed the suspension shortly after he added to his international goal haul by helping his nation beat Liberia and Namibia in successive 1-0 victories during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, scoring in both games.

Because he was adjudged to be ineligible to play in those matches and those were the games he was punished for, the opposition have been given 3-0 walkover wins, but the same report claims that FEGUIFUT plans to have the results overturned by taking the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
