There were a few great soccer players of the 20th century. They played for international teams such as Brazil, Germany, Italy, and Argentina and top European clubs. These are a few of the great soccer players of the last century.
Pele
Pele was Brazil’s skillful forward who starred on the 1958 and 1970 World Cup-winning teams. He was the best player on both
teams and scored goals in both finals. He had a significant impact in the 1958 final, scoring twice to secure a 5-2 win against Sweden. As such, he lifted the Jules Rimmet trophy twice with Brazil before retiring from international soccer after the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
At club level, Pele never played for a top European club, and remained loyal to Santos. There, he won many trophies, and his goal-scoring record was exceptional, with just over 1000 goals scored for the club.
Maradonna
To some, Maradonna was the best player of the 20th century. Indeed, he won the Player of the Century award from FIFA with a good share of the votes. He played more as a second striker who assisted and scored goals.
Maradonna made his biggest impact in the 1986 World Cup, inspiring Argentina to triumph in the final against West Germany and scoring the tournament’s best goal in the quarter-finals. His terrific dribbling dumfounded the England players, as he ran from his team’s half into the penalty box to score for Argentina. Maradona was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player in that World Cup. He did not play as well in other World Cups, but his form with Napoli helped the club win numerous domestic and European trophies.
Van Basten
Van Basten was undoubtedly the best player in the game in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This striker scored hundreds of goals for both AC Milan and Ajax. With Milan, he won the European Cup twice, along with a number of Seria A titles.
At international level, Van Basten starred for the Holland team that won the 1988 European Championship. He scored with a fine volley in the final against the USSR, regarded as one of the best-ever goals in the European Championships. During his career, Van Basten was World Player of the Year in 1992 and European Player of the Year three times.
Muller
Muller was Germany’s finest striker and one of the best of all time. For both club and country, Muller was a goal machine. He was consistently the top goal-scorer in Germany for Bayern Munich, scoring 398 goals, and won the European Cup.
At the international level, Muller scored just over a goal a game for Germany. He was the top goal-scorer in the 1970 FIFA World Cup and European Player of the Year. He scored more goals to help West Germany win the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Muller was a quick player with great acceleration and a fine aerial game.
