Thembela Maliwa, Kaizer Chiefs, PSL
After looking for improvements in scouting, recruiting, and signing players, Kaizer Chiefs hired former Mamelodi Sundowns head of scouting, Tera Maliwa, with the aim of improving their squad more effectively.
Despite the involvement of Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr in player recruitment, the arrival of Maliwa has brought significant upgrades to the way things work at Naturena.

Sources close to the club have indicated that the Head of Scouting and Recruitment, Maliwa will work with both the Sporting Director and Head Coach Nasreddine Nabi, but the latter has the final say in most scouting decisions.
The sources added that Maliwa has been given the mandate to identify players who will fit into the Kaizer Chiefs culture and system, just as he did at Sundowns, as a way of bringing back the Amakhosi glory days.
“The way it’s set up, it will help the team so much. The Head of Scouting knows the kind of players the team is looking at and the head coach has players he is looking at and the two will then sit down and agree which one fits the culture and system of the club and then decide which players to sign. But at least now there is someone who scouts the players for the club,” said the Siya source.
“Most of the time in the past it was mostly agents or intermediaries recommending players to the club, then the technical team in working with the Sporting Director, or the football manager will look at those players and decide who they could sign. Now it’s a bit different and progressive for the team with the head of scouting taking charge,” the source added.
“You have to understand that the Sporting Director has more work when the players are now at the club than about recruiting them. He has to look at their contracts. Their salaries and other logistics at the club. Actually he plays a very important role in running the team therefore they are working together in recruiting the best players which the head of scouting and recruitment recommends and the technical team is happy with,” said the second insider.
“So that’s how things will work now,” the insider added.
Chiefs continue to refine their recruitment strategy, so the addition of Maliwa as Head of Scouting and Recruitment marks a significant step forward. With a more structured and collaborative approach, the club aims to bring in players who can help restore their former glory. Fans will be eager to see how these changes impact the team’s performances in the coming seasons.
