The KMI Airport Charity Cup was a not-to-be-missed communal tournament, which benefitted the competing teams and some non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Four local football teams, namely Atlanta, Real Madrid and Sincobile Football Clubs, as well as TT Sporting, tussled for the winning cheques at the eDwaleni Sport Ground on September 7.

Real Madrid Football Club took the top prize and received R3 000, while the NGO on whose behalf they played received R5 000. There was also a friendly game before the final between the KMI Airport soccer team and Dwaleni Masters.

Sincobile and Real Madrid FCs went head to head for the ultimate prize.

KMI Airport’s head of community liaison, Mbongeni Mashigo, said this was its second charity tournament that ended in great success. “It is about bringing the community together and uplifting those organisations that are adjacent to the airport.”

Mashigo said the winner’s NGO had to share the R5 000 with the three others, as they had not complied with the rules of the tourney, which state that each NGO’s representatives must be present for the duration of the tournament for it to receive the money.
