Ruben Amorim made two changes from the draw with Liverpool as Alejandro Garnacho replaced Amad Diallo while Altay Bayindir replaced Andre Onana in goals.
The Gunners had the ball in the back of the net after 17 minutes when Gabriel Jesus played in Gabriel Martinelli, who made no mistake but the celebrations were cut short due the offside flag.
United, meanwhile, were quite happy to sit back and soak up the pressure as the Gunners dominated possession, although Amorim’s charges were unable to carve out any openings in the final third.
The hosts were forced to make a change five minutes before the halftime break as Jesus was stretchered off after a collision with Bruno Fernandes, with Raheem Sterling brought on as his replacement.
United got the breakthrough five minutes into the second half as a swift counter-attack ended with Garnacho surging to the box before teeing up Fernandes, who sent a first-time strike into the corner from the edge of the box.
The game turned on the hour mark when the visitors were reduced to ten men after Diogo Dalot was given his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card of the game.
The Gunners made the numbers game count as they equalised two minutes after the sending off when Gabriel Magalhaes was on hand to volley home after United failed to deal with a set-piece.
Arsenal were then afforded the chance take the lead in the 70th minute from the penalty spot after Kai Havertz went down un the challenge of Harry Maguire. Martin Odegaard stepped up and saw his spot-kick saved by Bayindir.’Both sides had chances to win the game in the closing stages, but neither were able to take advantage as the clash would go on to extra-time.
It was more of the same in extra-time but United had defended superbly to send the game to peanlties, where United held their nerve to convert all five penalties while Bayindir also saved Havertz’s spot-kick.
