The Frenchman missed a penalty that could have drawn Los Blancos level in the 61st minute, after Argentinian midfielder Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool in front nine minutes earlier.
The Reds eventually went on to add a second through Cody Gakpo to secure a 2-0 victory over the 15-time European champions at Anfield.
Real’s latest defeat means they have now been beaten three times in their opening five Champions League matches, with Mbappe seemingly facing most of the criticism.
France’s captain joined Los Blancos as a free agent at the start of the campaign, but has found himself completely out of form.
The striker has netted only nine times in the 18 matches he has played so far and has provided just two assists across all competitions.
French publication RMC Sport put out a scathing assessment of his latest showing.
“Even the way he shoots on goal is horrible. He emanates concern, he is not even a soccer player anymore,” they wrote.
“On the pitch he no longer does anything, he achieves nothing, he can neither run nor move. He is at the bottom of the mine.”
Another France-based outlet, Le Parisien, said:
“Without Vinicius he suffered the comparison and could not assume the role of leader. It will be a night that he will have to forget soon – he missed many passes, he lost a ball that caused the first chance for the net, he missed a poorly executed penalty, he was unable to create danger. His lack of confidence is detrimental to Real Madrid.”
