On Thursday, it was confirmed that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is among the nominees for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award, despite the Argentine having made just four appearances in the division.
Messi joined the Herons earlier this year and was immediately involved in the team’s Leagues Cup campaign, with the MLS resuming after the Miami-based outfit clinched the trophy.
An injury has kept the 36-year-old out of recent MLS games, with PSGTalk reporting that fans in the United States are confused by his nomination.
Messi is also up for the MLS Newcomer of the Year prize, with midfielder Sergio Busquets also among the nominees, along with former Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke (FC United) and former Barcelona starlet Riqui Puig (LA Galaxy).
Messi has only twice completed 90 minutes in his four MLS appearances.
