Crop comments: It does feel harsh to drop Gilmour out of No. 1 on a two-win week (7-0 over Fairview and 6-0 over No. 8 West Geauga). But at the same time, it cannot be understated how massive of a result Mayfield beating Twinsburg, 2-1, on Sept. 23 is for the Wildcats. The Tigers are always one of the best sides in Northeast Ohio and came in unbeaten at 6-0-3. The signature result that’s been requested in this space for Mayfield has now been notched. A win of that magnitude has to take priority, Gilmour tied Twinsburg, 0-0 — and in turn with all of that, we now have a new No. 1 side. … Mentor will not pay a heavy price for a 2-0 loss to Medina and a 1-0 setback to Solon, which dealt Mayfield its lone defeat this fall. … No. 1 isn’t the only conundrum. Granted, Kenston is 3-6-1. But it has head-to-head wins over Berkshire and Perry, the latter 3-2 victory Sept. 21 handing the Pirates their first loss. Plus, the Bombers were competitive with Mayfield. So even at 3-6-1, they’re a natural fit to go to No. 4 this week. … Berkshire ticks back up as well after dealing Wickliffe its first loss, 2-1, on Sept. 21, but is blocked for now from ascending further due to the loss to Kenston.
Note: Matches considered through Sept. 25.
