The draw for the latest edition of the continent’s premier club competition has just taken place, and some mouthwatering encounters have been thrown up.
Reigning and record African champions Al Ahly will be looking to become the first side ever to win the Champions League three times in a row, but will have to navigate their way through Group C, which includes Orlando Pirates, CR Belouizdad and Stade D’Abidjan.
The Red Devils qualified comfortably for the group stage after they thwarted Kenyan outfit Gor Mahia 6-0 on aggregate during the second-round preliminary stage.
The Champions League will have some east African representation nonetheless as Young Africans also successfully made it to the group phase.
They were eliminated by Mamelodi Sundowns during the quarter-finals last season, and this time around they will be looking to go further, but first they will have to make their way out of Group A. It includes Al Hilal, MC Alger and TP Mazembe.
The side that was able to do what Yanga could not last season by defeating Masandawana were Esperance de Tunis.
They beat the South African side 2-0 over the two legs of their semi-final encounter, but will have to successfully navigate past Pyramids, GD Sagrada Esperanca and Djoliba AC De Bamako in Group D if they are to make it to yet another final.
