Billiat was on the books of Zimbabwean Premier League side Yadah FC last term, where he registered 13 goals and 11 assist.

The impressive form saw Billiat finish as second runners-up for the Soccer Star of the Year award, but he was named the Fans’ Player of the Year.

The 34-year-old also returned to the Zimbabwe national team last year and helped the Warriors qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

‘It’s exactly what U.S. soccer needed’ – CBS reporter Jenny Chiu on ‘big changes’ by Emma Hayes, Mauricio Pochettino’s ‘pedigree’ and possible UCL glory for Inter | Goal.com South Africa

‘It’s exactly what U.S. soccer needed’ – CBS reporter Jenny Chiu on ‘big changes’ by Emma Hayes, Mauricio Pochettino’s ‘pedigree’ and possible UCL glory for Inter | Goal.com South Africa

The CBS reporter joined Mic’d up to discuss the U.S. national teams, women’s soccer in Mexico and Champions League

Jenny Chiu remembers her days as captain of the Mexican U17 national team, being asked to tell reporters that her country badly needed a domestic soccer league. She was there, in the formative times in which the women’s game, in particular, was sorely lacking in investment and coverage.

But now the landscape is markedly different, and Chiu is on the other side. As sideline reporter, analyst and studio host for CBS Sports, Chiu is a journalist covering the game, on both the men’s and women’s side. For her, the immense development of soccer in the United States is a sort of vindication of her own personal journey.

“I was told out of college to do football, to do basketball, there’s no money in soccer… And I was like ‘I’m only in this because I like the game and enjoy soccer, and that’s what I grew up with.’ And thank goodness, because now it’s paying off,” Chiu tells GOAL.

Chiu was on the wave early of women’s soccer growth, and has long followed USWNT Emma Hayes. Chiu spent time breaking down her tactics and making U.S.-based content for Chelsea women when the prolific manager was winning everything possible in the WSL and in Europe. These days, it’s a full circle moment, with the former Mexican youth national star now covering the manager she analyzed from afar.

And Hayes couldn’t be a better fit, she argues.

“After our failures over and over again, and falling in the world rankings and all of those things, Emma Hayes came in at a great time with the respect of the players, with the respect of the organization. I think it’s only up from here with he,” Chiu said.

But that’s not her only focus. Chiu is also handles sideline reporting for Champions League, as well as coverage of the USMNT. She can see the impact that new manager Mauricio Pochettino has had on the team.

“We’ve needed it for so long. For someone to elevate how seriously we’re taken, you also needed a manager to be at that level,” she said.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Chiu is cognizant of her position in the space. Texas-born to Chinese and Mexican parents, Chiu is part of a far-too-small group of minority women at the forefront of the game. But her fluency in Spanish helped her get off the ground as a reporter. And in an ever-changing, ever-growing, but always global game, she might be the perfect example of how the sport can touch different corners of a country.

Chiu discussed the USWNT’s success under Hayes, Pochettino’s influence on soccer in America and more in the latest edition of Mic’d Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL US taps into the perspective of broadcasters, analysts and other pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and abroad.

Khama Billiat signs for new club

Khama Billiat signs for new club

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star Khama Billiat has signed for a new club after an impressive 2024 season. Billiat was the Soccer Star of the Year runner-up after a fine season with Yadah FC.

The ex-Ajax attacker scored 13, the second-best tally in the Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League. Furthermore, Billiat contributed significantly with 11 assists, resulting in a remarkable total of 24 direct goal involvements for Yadah.

Following the expiry of his contract on 31 December 2024, he has found a new home. The 34-year-old winger was officially unveiled on Thursday by cash-rich PSL newcomers Scottland FC after signing on a free transfer.

The club confirmed the signing of Billiat via social media. However, the details of the contract, including its length, were not disclosed. This move sees Billiat continue to ply his trade in the Zimbabwean top flight for a second consecutive season following his return to the country after a decade-long stint in South African football.

Scottland FC, who recently gained promotion to the PSL, will be hoping that Billiat’s experience and proven goal-scoring ability can help them establish themselves in the top flight and avoid relegation in their debut season.

Billiat had been the subject of interest from South African teams, but nothing materialised. At Scottland, he will be joined by Knowledge Musona’s sibling, Walter. The former Polokwane City winger has been linked to the club after bidding farewell to league winners Simba Bhora.

ABOUT KHAMA BILLIAT’S NEW CLUB

Scottland FC is owned by Pedzai Sakupwanya, a Member of Parliament and gold dealer who is reported to have ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Following their victory in the Northern Region Soccer League [NRSL], Sakupwanya presented the trophy to President Mnangagwa.

The club receives sponsorship from various sources, including Betterbrands, Sakunda Holdings, IMC Communications and Ecobank.

With growing interest in Bafana Bafana and Esperance de Tunis winger Elias Mokwana, Soccer Laduma has learned who is the Dutch club reportedly wanting him.

Siya sources close to the player have indicated that FC Twente have reached out to both Esperance and Mokwana’s representatives, noting that a move could materialise soon.

The insiders added that Mokwana’s impressive performances in the CAF Champions League and for Bafana Bafana have significantly raised his profile, attracting inquiries from various parties.

“There have been teams in South Africa as well as in France interested in him but now the most serious one is the team from Holland. It’s FC Twente. They have seen him in action for both Esperance and Bafana Bafana and they are happy with what they have seen. The thing is they have most of their scouts based in North Africa but they have different recruiters and agents who they work with and some of them are the ones who have recommended Elias (Mokwana) to the team,” said the Siya source.

“So FC Twente have inquired about him to Esperance and that is where things are at the moment. We just have to monitor what’s going on with his future as there are many teams interested in him from different European countries. His future looks really bright,” the Siya source told Soccer Laduma.

Since his move to Tunisia at the start of the season, Mokwana has become a regular for Bafana Bafana and has scored two goals in eight Tunisian Ligue Professionelle 1 matches. He has also been a key contributor in the CAF Champions League, finding the back of the net on multiple occasions. If Mokwana joins FC Twente, he would become the second South African star to play for that particular Dutch side, following in the footsteps of former Bafana Bafana striker Bernard Parker, who spent seasons with the club from 2009 to 2011 before returning to South Africa to join Kaizer Chiefs.

Should Mokwana join FC Twente, it would mark a significant step in his burgeoning career. As Mokwana navigates these opportunities, his potential transfer reflects a growing appreciation for his talents on the European stage, promising a bright future ahead.

‘Even if I must be a club driver’: Clayton Daniels on retirement plans

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town defender Clayton Daniels has revealed his intentions regarding a potential retirement in the near future.

Daniels, 40, is currently in the books of the SAFA Western Cape ABC Motsepe League club Crystal Palace FC. Palace bought Ikapa Sporting FC’s Motsepe League status before the commencement of the new campaign.

He joined the amateur side at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign after leaving Cape Town Spurs in March 2024.

The Manenberg-based club, captained by Daniels, has played six games in Stream A of its provincial ABC Motsepe League. In these six games, they have accumulated 11 points, placing them third in their stream.

CLAYTON DANIELS ON WHETHER HE PLANS TO RETIRE SOON

Following his departure from Spurs last year, there were claims suggesting that Daniels intends to continue playing until he is 42, although he maintains that he never made such a statement.

Daniels does not intend to retire from playing anytime soon, even if it requires becoming the kit man or serving as the club driver. He will continue to play as long as he is in a training setting where he feels valued and is helping someone become the next Clayton Daniels.

“You know, I never even said that. You say things, and people put them in their own words. As long as I’m on the football field and in a training environment, I want to be where I can give back to the community and the players in an environment where people appreciate me. I will give my best,” Daniels told FARPost.

“So, even if it means I must be the kit man, or even if I must be the driver, the player, or a coach, it doesn’t matter. For me, I love football. Football is my heartbeat. So, that is all about it. If I could help the next person grow and become the next Clayton Daniels, why not? That is my love for the game.

“People who know me know I would do anything for football. However, I won’t say that I won’t retire in the future. I don’t care about what people say; I do my job and give my best, whether it is from the field or the bench.”
