Amorim: ‘Lost’ Man United turn focus to ‘survival’
Ruben Amorim has accepted Manchester United are in a relegation battle following their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United and admitted his “focus is on survival.”
United slumped to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions and a third consecutive loss in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Monday. It has left Amorim’s side 14th in the table, just seven points above the relegation places.
Alexander Isak and Joelinton. Amorim responded by substituting Joshua Zirkzee after just 33 minutes with the Dutchman roundly jeered by the home supporters as he walked off.
“It was a very difficult moment [for Zirkzee] and he is a human being,” said Amorim. “I’m responsible. When you have these kind of moments, especially in the big clubs, you work really hard to turn things around, especially when you don’t have a lot of time to train the basics to cope with the difficult moments.
“It’s a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game and implement the idea to win games. I think it’s really hard on everybody and you can feel it on the pitch.
“With the lack of training and the lack of belief after so many losses and some difficult moments, you suffer some goals in the beginning of games and then it’s really hard during all the games.”
The loss to Newcastle condemned United to their worst points haul, 51, in a calendar year ever in the Premier League and a trip to first-place Liverpool next up on the fixture list on Sunday.

Sources: U.S. forward Vázquez leaving Monterrey
Brandon Vázquez is set to depart from CF Monterrey after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with the Liga MX team, sources told ESPN.
The United States forward now leaves the Mexican club less than a year after joining Monterrey on Jan. 10, 2024 from FC Cincinnati for a multi-million dollar fee. He recorded 14 goals and one assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, helping Monterrey reach the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals and Liga MX Apertura final.

Vazquez often came into the match as a substitute, making the starting 11 just seven times throughout the Liga MX Apertura and Liguilla. Former head coach Fernando Ortiz and new manager Martin Demichelis opted to kick off with Germán Berterame instead of the American.
Reports have linked the player to various MLS teams, with the most prominent being new expansion team San Diego FC. The Western Conference team is still building out their roster ahead of their league debut in February 2025, with Hirving Lozano as the only Designated Player so far.
San Diego can still add two DPs to their squad.
Vazquez, a San Diego native, left MLS in 2024 with 86 goals in 150 after three seasons with Atlanta United FC and four with Cincinnati. While in Atlanta, Vazquez inspired the team to the MLS Cup in 2018 and the U.S. Open Cup 2019 before leading Cincinnati to the Supporters’ Shield in 2023.
Internationally, Vazquez has recorded four goals in 11 appearances for the USMNT. He was most recently called up by new manager Mauricio Pochettino for the November camp to face Jamaica in the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals.

Manchester United suffered their third straight loss in the Premier League after going down 2-0 to Newcastle United on Monday night.
Premier League
Result: Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle United
Date: 30 December 2024
Venue: Old Trafford
Joshua Zirkzee and Casemiro were recalled in place of the suspended Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, while Marcus Rashford was named in the squad but only made the bench.
The home crowd were silenced after just four minutes when Lewis Hall did well to pick out an un-marked Aleksander Isak, who headed home from close range.
Newcastle’s impressive start continued as they doubled their lead in the 18th minute in similar fashion to the first, as Anthony Gordon turned provider to Joelinton, who nodded home from close range.
With the hosts struggling to deal Newcastle on all fronts, coach Ruben Amorim opted to make a substitution as Kobbie Mainoo came on for Zirkzee, who went straight down the tunnel in the 32nd minute.
The hosts should have pulled one back just before the break when Mainoo won the ball high up before setting up Casemiro, who fired wide of the target with only Martin Dubravka to beat in the box.
United came out with a bit more attacking intent in the second period and went agonisingly close to pulling one back as Harry Maguire saw his diving header crash against the upright.
Amorim responded with a double change for the Red Devils as Alejandro Garnacho and Yoro replaced Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez for the final 20 minutes of the second half.
However, the Red Devils were unable to find a way back into the contest as they slip to a third straight defeat in the league and four in a row across all competitions.

Talking tactics: Analyzing approaches of U.S. coaches Mauricio Pochettino, Emma Hayes, biggest trends in American soccer | Goal.com South Africa
From Pochettino’s groovy USMNT to Hayes’ high-powered USWNT, GOAL looks tactical developments in the American game
So another year in American soccer has gone by – what to make of it all on the tactics board? Making sweeping declarations about the technical bits of this sport is difficult. Such is the beauty of the game these days that every team can do a bit of everything. There is no one “correct” way of playing soccer, and different tactics work in different leagues for different teams with different personnel.
Such has been the case in the American game. MLS Cup winners LA Galaxy played a radically different style to the team they beat in the final, New York Red Bulls. Orlando Pride, too, looked mightily different to Washington Spirit in the NWSL. And on the national stage, both managers of the U.S.’s national teams – Mauricio Pochettino on the men’s side, Emma Hayes for the women – have employed markedly different styles.
The point here is that there is no single way to win in this game.
However, trends are real. And a look at the landscape of U.S. soccer shows some clear approaches forming at various levels – especially in MLS and NWSL. GOAL USA takes a look at some of the major tactical developments across various levels of the American game.

Rashford back in squad as Utd lose to Newcastle
Marcus Rashford returned to the Manchester United squad after a four-game exile.
The forward was named on the bench by Ruben Amorim as Newcastle United strolled to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford on Monday.
Manchester City on Dec. 15 with Amorim suggesting afterwards that the decision was based on the England international’s performances in training.
He also missed the defeats to Tottenham, Bournemouth and Wolves.
In the days after being omitted from the squad to face City at the Etihad, Rashford said he wanted to leave the club. He said the time is right for a “new challenge” and although Amorim has insisted he wants Rashford to stay at Old Trafford, sources have told ESPN that the club are open to offers in the January transfer window.
Rashford’s return has bolstered Amorim’s squad with both Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte suspended for the game against Newcastle.
Fernandes was sent off during the 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day while Ugarte picked up his fifth booking of the season at Molineux.
Asked why Rashford was back in the squad, Amorim told Sky Sports: “Selection, and we have a lot of players outside so he’s in. Like I say every week, I choose my players and he was there to be chosen. This time, he’s here.”
