Liverpool’s success this season could depend on the futures of their star players
LONDON — Liverpool need no reminders of the class of Mohamed Salah, but when the forward produced a blood-twisting shimmy while registering an assist for Cody Gakpo’s goal in their 5-0 win at West Ham United, the 32-year-old gave his employers a nudge that basically said, “Can you really do without me?”
And just for good measure, Trent Alexander-Arnold did the same when he scored with a deflected shot from 25 yards on 55 minutes to put Arne Slot’s side four goals clear of the Hammers and erase any doubt that the Premier League leaders would end 2024 with an eight-point edge at the top of the table.
This was the easiest of wins for Liverpool against a lacklustre West Ham side — a win that extended their unbeaten run to 23 games in all competitions — but it was also a day when Salah, Alexander-Arnold and the majestic Virgil van Dijk underlined just how important they still are to the club.
Diogo Jota’s goal, and Alexander-Arnold grabbed the spotlight with their contributions to the scoreline, but Van Dijk’s marshalling of the Liverpool defence was just as important, especially in the early stages when West Ham showed signs of life and threatened to score themselves.
But by the middle of this week, Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk will be free to speak to non-English clubs about a free agent move at the end of the season when their existing Anfield contracts expire. The Egyptian spoke postmatch Sunday, saying he’s “far away” from being able to give good contract news, less than 72 hours before he can talk to those other clubs.
“The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league, and I want to be part of that,” Salah said.
“I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There is a few other teams catching up with us and we need to stay focused and humble and go again.
“I am just trying to enjoy the game,” he said. “At the end of the day I came here for the result, and I wanted to do something in the game, but I am almost hungry for more.”
The uncertainty over Liverpool’s modern-day legends has hovered over the club since the start of this season, with fans hanging on every update, however insignificant, to give an indication as to whether the three will extend their contracts. Despite the doubts over Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool have been unfazed and shown no hint of being distracted by the “will they stay/will they leave” saga.
But things could now get messy, and how Liverpool deal with the speculation in the months ahead is perhaps the one issue that could derail their title bid.
That seems an unlikely prospect right now. Slot and his players have been head-and-shoulders above the rest so far this season — Liverpool also sit three points clear of the chasing pack in the UEFA Champions League — and they brushed West Ham aside without needing to get out of second gear.
But off-field noise can become a distraction, especially if it coincides with a run of indifferent results. Salah has already put his future at the front and centre of the debate twice this season with strategically timed comments, while recent days have seen reports in Spain offering the strongest hints yet that Real Madrid are hot on Alexander-Arnold’s tail.
Van Dijk has kept a low profile, as have Liverpool as a club, but sources have told ESPN that each negotiation is more complex than merely thrashing out a salary and contract length. With bonuses, image rights and agent fees to also discuss, contract talks can, and do, take months.
But once clubs begin to contact the players — if they haven’t already — then minds will naturally be diverted to thoughts of life in a new city, a new country and new colours. If Real offer to make Alexander-Arnold their new right-back, will he not allow his focus to shift to thoughts of wearing the iconic all-white kit at the Bernabéu?
Luis Díaz had scored their opener, was one of those moments that you generally associate with only a peak Lionel Messi. Having received the ball from Diaz, Salah wriggled between two defenders and changed his body shape in the same movement before teeing up Gakpo.
That move alone showed why he is unique and crucial to Liverpool. But so are Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, and while the picture is rosy as Liverpool end 2024, there might be trouble ahead in 2025 if their big three become a distraction.

Liverpool will end the year eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table after thrashing West Ham United 5-0 on Sunday night.
Premier League
Result: West Ham United 0-5 Liverpool
Date: 29 December 2024
Venue: London Stadium
The Reds made just one change from the win over Leicester City, as Luis Diaz has been restored to the starting line-up in place of Darwin Nunez, who dropped to the bench.
The game got off to a lively start as Lucas Paqueta scuffed his close-range strike after six minutes before Mohamed Salah was denied by a fine save from Alphonse Areola at the other end.
The visitors continued to threaten as the first half went on Diaz was given time and space to unleash a strike, but the Hammers had Areola to thank for pulling off the good save.
Arne Slot’s charges got the breakthrough in the 29th minute as Diaz latched onto a loose ball in the box before burying the ball into the bottom corner for his seventh league goal of the season.
The Reds doubled their lead in the 39th minute just minutes after West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus hit the upright as Salah turned provider with some neat skill to set up Cody Gakpo, who fired into an empty net.
The rout continued on the stroke of halftime as Salah got his name on the score-sheet by collecting a pass on the edge of the box and finding the bottom corner, although Areola should have done better.
Liverpool carried that momentum into the second half and grabbed a fourth goal nine minutes after the break when Trent Alexander-Arnold unleashed a strike from distance that took a big deflection and sailed into the bottom corner.
The Hammers nearly bagged a consolation goal with 15 minutes to play when Emerson did well to pick out Kudus in the box, but the Ghanaian’s header was kept out by the crossbar with Alisson Becker well beaten.
The Reds, however, were able to grab a fifth goal with seven minutes left on the clock as Salah grabbed his second assist by playing in substitute Diogo Jota, who curled one into the top corner to wrap up a good win.

Kopo: Why I Subbed Konqobe Against Chiefs | Soccer Laduma
GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA – OCTOBER 23: Ayabulela Konqobe of Chippa United during the Betway Premiership match between Chippa United and Stellenbosch FC at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on October 23, 2024 in Gqeberha, South Africa. (Photo by Richard Huggard/Gallo Images)
Chippa United head coach Kwanele Kopo has explained the decision to take off Ayabulela Konqobe in the first half against Kaizer Chiefs.
The Chilli Boys were unable to claim a victory in their final Betway Premiership clash of the year after losing 1-0 the Soweto giants.

Konqobe only lasted 35 minutes in the first half when he was replaced by Baraka Majogoro and instead heading to the bench, he marched straight down the tunnel.
Kopo has revealed it was nothing more than a tactical decision.
“It’s unfortunate, it’s something I always tell the players we never want to do but you also wonder if I leave him for longer it only gets worse,” Kopo told SuperSport after the game.
“So we apologized to him, he’s upset, every professional player would be but it’s a tactical situation we had to do.”
The Chilli Boys ended the year in ninth position, with 14 points from their 11 matches this campaign.
Kopo’s charges will have a bit of a break until their next Betway Premiership assignment against Royal AM on 11 January.

Nabi: Chiefs Played With Fear | Soccer Laduma
DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – DECEMBER 29: Nasreddine Nabi, head coach of Kaizer Chiefs during the Betway Premiership match between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa Unted at Moses Mabhida Stadium on December 29, 2024 in Durban, South Africa. (Photo by Darren Stewart/Gallo Images)
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi claims the players have a psychological issue after their 1-0 win over Chippa United.
The Amakhosi ended a three-game winless run in the Betway Premiership thanks Mduduzi Shabalala’s wonderful first-half strike.
The Tunisian tactician felt his team played with the handbrake on after taking the lead.

“We needed to start on the front foot, I would say the first half was good, not very good but was good. The only issue is after we scored the first goal, second-half we played with fear,” Nabi told SuperSport after the game.
“And when you play with fear, you play with the handbrake, you don’t go forward, you don’t go back but it’s understandable, it’s psychological, because the last results were not positive and the players wanted much to get the three points.
“But sometimes they felt like not going forward, just to sit back and defend but after these three points we’re confident that we can build from this.”
The Soweto giants also secured their first clean sheet of the campaign at the 10th attempt.
“Congratulations to everyone, the goalkeeper (Bruce Bvuma) as well, he made a good save at the end but we’re not there with the quality of game that we want to put forward but we believe that going we can build from that and have more consistency,” he added.

Wrexham leave it late again in last gasp win
Wrexham’s saviour for the second-straight match after his 91st minute goal against Wigan gave his side a 2-1 victory on Sunday.
Three days after he scored an 88th minute penalty to earn a 2-1 win against Blackpool, Fletcher secured all three points again for Wrexham as they re-claimed second spot in League One.
Winger Ryan Barnett gave Wrexham the lead in the second-half before Wigan hit back thanks to Joe Hugill 20 minutes later.
Wrexham looked on course for their third draw in four matches, before Fletcher controlled a cross from captain James McLean with his chest before his deflected shot landed in the back of the net.
The win caps off another successful year for Wrexham, who were promoted for the second season in-a-row following a second-place finish in League Two in April.
Wrexham — owned by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds — head into the new year behind Birmingham City, who have two games in hand.

Chiefs were still without Gaston Sirino, as they recalled Pule Mmodi in place of Njabulo Blom, in the only change from the draw against TS Galaxy.
Amakhosi were on the front foot in the opening exchanges as Yusuf Maart came close to giving them the lead with a header that produced acrobatics from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

However, the Glamour Boys could not regain their rhythm going forward midway into the first stanza, as they were quickly closed down by Chippa.
Nasreddine Nabi’s charges pinned The Chilli Boys in their own half with ten minutes to go before the interval but they could not get behind their defence, with the likes of Ashley Du Preez not getting service.
Wandile Duba, however, brought the game to life again for Chiefs shortly before the break with a curling shot that parried away from the top corner by Nwabali.
Amakhosi’s pressure finally paid off on the stroke of half-time after Mduduzi Shabalala beat Nwabali at his near post after he dribbled his way through in the box.
The Glamour Boys had a slow start in the second stanza and so did Chippa, as the game needed an inspiration.
Nabi reacted with an attacking change just after hour-mark, as Ranga Chivaviro came on for Mmodi for a different approach going forward.
However, it was Kwanele Kopo’s troops who came close to levelling matters 20 minutes before time after Sinoxolo Kwayiba’s header in the box came off the crossbar and fell kindly on the hands of shot-stopper Bruce Bvuma.
Chiefs slowed down the tempo of the game in the closing stages, looking to see out the 1-0 scoreline but United almost equalised from a counter-attack after Kwayiba’s low shot was crucially saved by Bvuma.
Amakhosi absorbed pressure in the end and held on to a narrow win that took them up to seventh on the log.
Here’s how they lined up:
Kaizer Chiefs: 44. Bvuma, 39. Frosler, 84. Miguel, 14. Dortley, 24. Ditlhokwe, 8. Maart, 5. Mthethwa, 13. Mmodi, 36. Duba, 42. Shabalala, 9. Du Preez.
