The big questions the first Premier Soccer League matchday should answer – From Mamelodi Sundowns to Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United | Goal.com South Africa

The MTN8 whet our appetite, but now the 2025/26 league season begins, bringing pressure, hype and big expectations for giants and underdogs alike.

The first Premier Soccer League matchday may not define the season, but it will reveal. It will reveal who’s ready, who’s rusty and who might already be in over their heads. Will Mamelodi Sundowns continue their relentless stride? Can Kaizer Chiefs weather the storm without head coach Nasreddine Nabi? Will Orlando Pirates make a title statement? Can Stellenbosch shake off the Chiefs-shaped spotlight? Will Sekhukhune prove their rise was no fluke?

And further down the ladder, with relegation always lurking like a shadow, can newcomers Orbit College and Durban City survive the jump, or are they set for a harsh reality check?

A Mamelodi Sundowns striker is believed to have returned to the team ahead of the Betway Premiership opener against Chippa United.

Peter Shalulile was not included in the matchday squad last weekend when Sundowns thrashed Richards Bay FC in the MTN8 quarter-finals.

Insiders close to the Brazilians have now indicated that the Namibian has returned to the team and was part of the travelling squad to Gqeberha for the clash against the Chilli Boys.

“Yes, he is back at with the team. He was here yesterday when the team was going to camp. He is believed to be part of the players who went into camp to fly off to PE today as the game is tomorrow. About playing, I can’t say much as that’s all up to the coach. He is the one who will decide whether he plays or not. But obviously as a professional he has been training on his own though, it’s different when you train with the team, but he has traveled with the traveling squad,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Siya sources have indicated that right-back Khuliso Mudau was also spotted at Chloorkop on Thursday, although it is unsure if he travelled with the team.

“Sailor (Mudau) was also here on (Thursday). He was going to the dressing rooms but I didn’t see him going to the bus with the traveling players. So for Mudau I can’t say whether he traveled or not, but it’s believed that he is also back with the team. You know both Shalulile and Mudau have a one-year option with the team as things stand right now, ” the second source revealed.

Sundowns start the defence of their Betway Premiership title at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, with the clash scheduled to get underway at 15h00.

Human Set For European Switch

South African midfielder Rowan Human is on the verge of completing a move to Europe, the Siya crew has been informed.

The 24-year-old was initially included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 campaign, which spans across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

However, Human was a surprise omission from the final squad that jetted out for the tournament, and it has now emerged that his exclusion was linked to an impending overseas transfer.

Sources close to the situation have confirmed that Human is set to travel in the coming days to finalise a deal with FK Partizani, who are one of Albania’s most prominent clubs and currently competing in UEFA Europa League qualifiers.

The club secured a fourth-place finish in the Kategoria Superiore last season, which earned them a place in European competition.

Human, a product of the Bidvest Wits development system and formerly on the books of Maritzburg United and most recently AmaZulu, has long been tipped for a local.

It will be his second foray abroad, having plied his trade in Israel previously.

Bafana Denied Victory In CHAN Opener

Bafana Bafana started their African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a 1-1 draw against Algeria on Friday evening.

African Nations Championship

Result: Algeria 1-1 South Africa

Date: 08 August 2025

Venue: Mandela National Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema was given the captain’s armband, resuming the role he had during the qualifiers a few months ago while coach Molefi Ntseki handed starts to Malibongwe Khoza, Kegan Johannes, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Terrence Mashego.

The Algerians looked lively in the early stares and they went clos taking the lead on 11 minutes through Abderrahmane Meziane, whose first-time volley was kept out by goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu.

The North African side got their reward in the 26th minute when Abdennour Belhocini pounced on a loose just outside the area and unleashed a powerful volley that Xulu was unable to keep out.

Bafana, meanwhile, had to wait until the stroke of halftime to get the equaliser when Menzi Masuku deflected into the path of Thabiso Kutumela, who showed the composure to slot into the far corner.

The second half was a lot more open compared to the first, although Bafana were let down by their decision-making in the final third as they edged the possession statistics.

Coach Molefi Ntseki responded with a double change for the final 25 minutes as Keagan Dolly and Fortune Makaringe replaced Johannes and Masuku as they went in search of the go-ahead goal.

Both sides continued to push for a winner in the closing stages of the second half, but neither were able to secure a clear-cut chance in the final third as the encounter ended all square.

Bafana will be in action on Monday afternoon against Guinea.

Here’s how they lined up:

South Africa: Xulu, Mphahlele, Johannes, Mngonyama, Khoza, Mashego, Ndlondlo, Maema, Jooste, Kutumela, Masuku

Man Utd have ‘no excuses’ with new training base

Man Utd have ‘no excuses’ with new training base

Manchester United have “no excuses” in their bid to get back to the top of English and European football, according to Diogo Dalot, after the club opened their new £50 million ($67.2m) training centre.

The first-team building at Carrington re-opened on Friday after a year-long project driven by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Speaking at the opening, Ratcliffe likened the old facility to “a hospital.”

The 72-year-old branded the new training centre as “world class” and Dalot, one of Ruben Amorim’s new six-man leadership team, said it’s now up to the players to produce performances to match.

“I think finally we’re getting to a level where this club deserves and now it’s up to us, on the pitch, to also match that standard,” said Dalot.

“If we’re talking about a club like Man United, we should have the best facilities in the world. The big thing that I like the most is now there’s going to be no excuses.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was critical of United’s training ground after returning to the club in 2021.

He said “nothing changed” in the 12 years since his departure to Real Madrid in 2009 and that the club had “stopped in time.”

“I’m sure he would love it if he would be able to see it,” said Dalot when asked about Ronaldo’s comments made just before he left for Al Nassr in 2022.

“But overall I think the message was clear that this club deserved even more and all credit to Sir Jim and his team.”

The revamped building — originally opened in 2000 — includes a high-altitude chamber, sleep pods, a padel court, Formula 1 simulator and a barber’s room for players to bring in their own hairdresser.

“When I first came to Carrington two years ago, we had a presentation here. It was clear then. It was [cutting edge] I am sure in 2000, but 25 years later it wasn’t quite at the level it needed to be for one of the top four or five clubs in the world.

“It felt like you were in a hospital in the basement. It was a slightly gloomy place, a gloomy rabbit warren. Now it is open, fresh, quite modern. It encourages interaction. That is what we needed.”

United took inspiration from the Los Angeles Rams’ training facility and Leicester City’s state-of-the-art training ground, which cost £100m and opened in 2020.

Tom Heaton spent quite a lot of time at [Football Association training base] St George’s Park so I was saying ‘what’s the best parts of that and he was explaining the different areas’,” said Roche.

“We’ve got a core, so Bruno [Fernandes], Harry [Maguire], Tom, Diogo and we asked what they wanted and they gave me some great ideas.”

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the game as it happens, wherever you are in the world, and how to use a VPN if the match isn’t available where you are.

Spearheaded by the ambitious ownership of Tom Wagner and NFL legend Tom Brady, Birmingham was promoted up from League One last season with a record points tally. Summer acquisitions such as Demarai Gray, Kyogo Furuhashi and Taylor Gardner-Hickman should help maintain that momentum as they seek back-to-back promotions.

Having retained the services of much-coveted manager Kieran McKenna, the Tractor Boys are meanwhile seen as the favorites to win this season’s Championship and make an immediate return to the English Premier League, despite losing key striker Liam Delap to Chelsea earlier this summer.

Birmingham City take on Ipswich Town on Friday, Aug. 8, at St. Andrew’s, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. BST local time. That makes it a 3 p.m. ET or 12 p.m. PT start in the US and Canada, and a 5 a.m. AEST kickoff in Australia on Saturday morning.

American soccer fans can stream this fixture on CBS Sports Network via Paramount Plus, which has exclusive live English-language broadcast rights in the US for the EFL Championship this season.

Paramount Plus has two main subscription plans in the US: Essential for $8 a month and Premium for $13 a month. Both offer coverage of the Championship.

The cheaper Essential option has ads for on-demand streaming and lacks live CBS feeds, as well as the ability to download shows to watch offline later. Newcomers to the service can take advantage of a 30-day free trial, while students may qualify for a 25% discount.
