Men’s Soccer Erupts for Four Goals Late, Downs Benedictine – Hope College
Purchase Orange and Blue Weekend Pass (3 games for $18)
The Hope College men’s soccer team found its scoring touch down the stretch to claim a 4-0 victory at Benedictine University (Illinois) on Saturday near Chicago.
The Flying Dutchmen struck for four goals over the final 26 ½ minutes to top their non-league foe.
Hope extended its winning streak to two matches and evened its overall record at 3-3. The Flying Dutchmen snapped a three-game losing streak by winning twice on the road this week by a combined margin of 14-0.
“I’ve been proud of the guys this week,” head coach David Blahnik said. “We had a really tough schedule early on. They’ve been practicing very hard, staying committed to the process. Today was a great example of that; the training this week translated into our games. We were confident the goals would come. Obviously, they did.”
At Benedictine (13-1), Hope dominated play. Still, the match remained scoreless until sophomore Jackson Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) delivered the game-winner with 26 minutes, 29 seconds remaining off an assist from junior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph).
It was Mindling’s team-leading fifth goal of the season and 14th in his career.
The Flying Dutchmen tripled Benedictine’s shot production with a 27-9 edge.
Junior Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) then broke the game open by scoring twice in less than three minutes during the 69th and 72nd minutes.
Weigel, playing not far from his hometown, buried two shots in the low right corner of the goal. He now has three goals on the season, matching his career-high. He has eight career goals.
Walters closed the scoring in the 89th minute with his third goal of the season and the 21st of his career.
In goal, sophomore Daniel Morgan (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) posted a seven-save shutout.
The Flying Dutchmen next play on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. Central at the University of Chicago.

MLS Season Pass on Apple TV |

Inter Miami may sit sixth in the Eastern Conference on points, but they are third in the table when it comes to points-per-game, likely a more accurate representation of where they truly stand.
While other clubs have continued to play mostly every week, Miami have had several games postponed to the end of the season due to FIFA Club World Cup, Concacaf Champions Cup and Leagues Cup participation.
Miami won’t be able to call on Luis Suárez up top due to his suspension following a spitting incident in the Leagues Cup Final or Fafa Picault, who suffered a foot injury while playing for Haiti.
Yet, Miami will still be able to field a strong lineup. Expect Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul to return to the squad after Argentina wrapped up World Cup qualifying, as well as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who dodged suspensions despite involvement in the Leagues Cup scuffle.

Inter Miami Predicted Lineup vs. Orlando City (4-2-3-1): Ustari; Weigandt, Luján, Falcón, Alba; Busquets, De Paul; Rodriguez, Messi, Segovia; Allende

History looms for Charlotte FC as they visit Miami. After a slight midsummer dip, head coach Dean Smith’s side has found incredible form, winning eight straight games and remaining undefeated since a victory over New York City FC on June 12.
A win would see them tie the 2018 Seattle Sounders with nine straight victories, standing as the longest MLS win streak outside of the shootout era.
All eyes will be on breakout striker Idan Toklomati, who has stepped up in the leading role since the club sold USMNT player Patrick Agyemang to Derby County in the English Championship. This season, the Israel international has eight goals and four assists, and has recently formed a potent partnership with winger Wilfried Zaha, who has seven goals and nine assists.
The Crown could clinch a spot in the postseason with a win and rise as high as second in the Eastern Conference standings, as they hope to maintain a top-four spot and home field advantage in the first round best-of-three series.
While it’s mostly good news for Smith’s side, they will be missing midfielder Pep Biel and his 10 goals and 12 assists as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. However, they are expected to welcome back USMNT center back Tim Ream, as well as CanMNT fullback Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty from international duty.

Charlotte FC Predicted Lineup vs. Inter Miami (4-3-3): Kahlina; Byrne, Ream, Malanda, Marshall-Rutty; Westwood, Williamson, Bronico; Zaha, Toklomati, Vargas
Inter Miami will be looking to bounce back quickly after a heartbreaking Leagues Cup final in Seattle, but finding a win against one of the most in-form teams in MLS will be an incredibly difficult task. At the same time, Miami’s defensive lapses and lack of an outright striker without Suárez could come back to bite them handing Charlotte all three points.
Score Prediction: Inter Miami 1–3 Charlotte FC

Virginia youth soccer team could forfeit season over Bible verse on jerseys
PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. — A youth soccer team in Prince George County could lose their entire season over Bible verses printed on the backs of their jerseys.
The team of 7, 8, and 9-year-olds is now caught in a controversy between parents and county officials about what can be displayed on uniforms in the county-run league.
Shauna Collins, whose 7-year-old son plays on the team, said her child loves the sport.
“This is our fourth season now that we’ve done it and he loves it. He’s grown so much since this year,” Collins said.

The games are organized through Prince George County Parks and Recreation Department. This season, Collins said the coach asked parents about adding something to the back of the jerseys.
“The coach had asked us if it was OK that we put a Bible verse on the jersey and told us the Bible verse and [they] taught it to our kids,” Collins said. “We had said, ‘Yes, it’s fine, it’s OK.’ It’s John 14:6.”
In that verse, Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
The situation changed when one parent questioned Parks and Recreation officials about uniform rules.
“Parks and Rec called our coach and said, ‘Hey, we’re ordering you all new jerseys with nothing on them. And told us we could not play if we had this on the back of our jersey,'” Collins said.
Parents quickly argued that jerseys have been customized for years with children’s names and even business names without issue.
Collins said county officials then delivered an ultimatum to the team.
“That if they show up on the field with those jerseys, they will not be able to play for the rest of the season,” Collins said.

The controversy has sparked heated debate on social media. Not everyone supports the Bible verse addition.
One opponent questioned online: “If you allow a Bible verse, can an agnostic or atheist person add something to the contrary (or something satanic)? If there’s a gay player, or a player with gay parents, would they be allowed to put a rainbow, triangle, or ‘protect trans youth’ patch?”
While the team is scheduled to play on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., Collins said they now have a backup plan if they are told not to play.
“The other team we are playing against has agreed that if they say we can’t play, we will scrimmage somewhere else and let these kids play,” Collins said.
County officials announced Friday afternoon that soccer games slated for Saturday would be rescheduled because of the First Responders’ Day Parade.
“Based on an expected increase in spectators and traffic — and after consulting with outside counsel on internal policies and constitutional issues — Prince George County will be rescheduling all soccer games originally set for Saturday, September 13, 2025. All coaches will be notified of the new dates.”
Officials also said that the new route for the parade will begin at L.L. Beazley Elementary School, continue down Courthouse Road, take a right onto Laurel Spring Road and then a right onto Courts Drive past Scott Park.

Harding Men’s Soccer Falls 2-0 at William Jewell – Harding University Athletics
History
LIBERTY, Mo. — The Harding men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 non-conference decision to William Jewell of the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Friday afternoon at Greene Stadium, unable to recover from two early goals by the Cardinals.
William Jewell took the lead in the 13th minute when Elliot Labeth connected on a cross from Alexis Ibarra, placing the shot into the top left corner of the goal. The Cardinals extended their lead shortly after halftime, as Kaleb Fannin scored in the 48th minute with an assist from Zach Nichols, making the score 2-0.
Harding’s offense out-shot William Jewell 11-8 for the match, but the Cardinals held the edge in shots on goal, 4-3. The Bisons also had two corner kicks to William Jewell’s five, and committed four fouls to the Cardinals’ six.
With the loss, Harding’s record moves to 1-2-1 on the season. William Jewell improved to 1-2-0.
The Bisons will return home for their next match, hosting DBU on Thursday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Stevens Smith Soccer Complex in Searcy.
