It is believed that one of the children, a nine-year-old girl, unfortunately lost her life during the accident after succumbing to injuries sustained there, while a 13-year-old was rushed to hospital together with the woman for treatment of the injuries they sustained.
The accident is said to have taken place on Wednesday morning on Andrew Mapheto Street in Tembisa between a Hyundai and a BMW after 07h00.
As confirmed by the police, the soccer player whose identity is known to the Siya crew, is said to be in police custody after handing himself over this afternoon.
“Yes, I can confirm that there was an accident which had a fatality. It happened in Tembisa this morning, involving two vehicles. One vehicle was driven by a 29-year-old male, while the other was being driven by a lady who was taking two kids to school,” Zweli Dlamini, chief specialist in media relations and spokesperson in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, confirmed to the Siya crew.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking police source has confirmed that the footballer, who was in action for his team in a game out of Gauteng last night, has since handed himself to the police.
“What I can tell you is that we attended the scene of the accident as metro police, as that is expected. When an accident happens, we rush to the scene. But we would not know the identity of the chap who was involved. But I know that it was a male and he is 29 years old. He was involved in an accident with another vehicle that was driven by a lady and had two children inside. Unfortunately, one of the children passed away,” said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A case of culpable homicide, negligent driving and fleeing the scene of an accident has been opened.
“The issue is that the guy was not at the scene when the metro police arrived. That’s why I wouldn’t know his identity. But I have it on good authority that he has handed himself to the police. Therefore, this is now a SAPS matter because that’s culpable homicide and therefore it is a criminal offence. I’m told that he has handed himself over at Rabie Ridge Police Station this afternoon. I don’t know what the guy’s name is, but I know that he is 29 and he is a professional soccer player who plays for one of the Gauteng-based PSL teams,” concluded the official.
