We’re in the midst of the madness, as postseason soccer has hit its critical mass here in Pittsburgh.
It took until late Halloween Night for the final kick to decide the last of the WPIAL Boys and Girls Soccer Finals contestants, but the field is now set as Highmark Stadium will be hosting eight matches this coming weekend, Thursday, November 2 – Saturday, November 4.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s six Division I college programs are in the midst of conference tournaments, and in the case of Robert Morris’ men’s team, playing Cleveland State on Senior Day on Wednesday, they still have an outside shot (of getting into the postseason tournament, but will need to beat Cleveland State (10 pts) and get a lot of help, as they’re tied with three schools at 8 points, with another NKU one-point ahead.
Pitt women’s soccer pulled off the big win at North Carolina, but when playing in the best conference in the land, that means they have to now face No. 1 Florida State, in Cary, NC in the ACC Semifinal (Thursday). Duquesne’s women’s soccer team also earned a big first round road playoff win at UMass, and now face No. 1 seeded Saint Louis, on Wednesday.
Pitt and Duquesne men’s teams will begin postseason play in their conference tournaments too — and after losing 6-0 to Notre Dame last Friday, the Panthers could be on the NCAA Tournament bubble, so a win at home vs Louisville would go a long way to earning an at-large berth. Duquesne has to travel, facing Davidson, in a road match on Friday.
Robert Morris women earned a historical win on Sunday too, beating Wright State, 4-1, and now they’re in the Horizon League Semifinal Round — facing No. 1 seed Milwaukee on its home turf — Thursday.
