The South African tactician accomplished an astonishing feat
on the biggest stage of continental club football as he led the champions of
Botswana to a monumental victory over the 1995 African title winners.
Despite not starting their domestic campaign, Galaxy was able
to edge out the Buccaneers 5-4 on penalties, securing their place in this
season’s edition of competition’s group stages. While the away side played a
relatively expansive game in the encounter’s first leg, Ramoreboli elaborated
why he employed different tactics for the return leg in Soweto.
“We wanted to drop deep, because we knew that they were going
to come at us, try to get those spaces behind them,” he started off by telling
members of the media.
“But to be honest, I think they were very disciplined in
terms of dealing with our counter attacking game because if you check today,
the [Paseka] Mako we usually see going forward and attacking, he was very
disciplined today.
“The only side that was always overloading was the [Thabiso]
Monyane side, which I think on that side we did not plant anybody because what
we wanted to do, we thought Mako would come and we wanted to deal with Monyane
in our zone because it was difficult for us to deal with Maswanganyi and
Monyane at the same time. So we had to allow one of them to have the ball and try
to deal with the other one.
“I think we did not have the confidence we had when we were at
home. But it’s obvious, you’re away, you’re leading 1-0, in the back of their
minds is to say ‘if we defend well and the match ends 0-0, we are going through’.

Failure
“Unfortunately, they managed to get a goal and I think it
unsettled us a bit but we came back and we managed to win it on penalties, which
I think we did try to practice as well, to make sure we come here and maybe
take it through, so I’m happy we managed to win.”
