With Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos confirming that talismanic midfielder Themba Zwane has suffered an Achilles tendon injury, the South African Football Association has now issued an update on the midfielder.

Fans were hoping that Zwane’s first half substitution in the match against Congo was a mere precautionary measure.

However it appears that the 35-year-old’s year of football has potentially come to an end after he suffered an Achilles injury in Bafana Bafana’s AFCON qualifier in Brazzaville on Tuesday evening.

SAFA has now confirmed that the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has undergone scans at the Clinique Médicale SECUREX in Brazzaville on Wednesday afternoon.

The statement further revealed that ‘Mshishi’ as Zwane is known, will be able to travel home with the rest of his teammates, where he will be further assessed upon arrival in South Africa.

“Our Chief Medical Officer at SAFA, Dr Thulani Ngwenya, has been in constant communication with Themba’s club Mamelodi Sundowns and has kept their medical team appraised every step of the way. Upon arrival back home in South Africa, all the necessary processes will be made available for Themba,” Dr Tshepo Molobi told SAFA’s communications department.

The news will come as a blow to both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana with Zwane being a crucial part of both sides.
