Moroka Swallows legend, Steve Sekano is hoping that the impending sale of the troubled Royal AM team will not affect the players negatively.
Royal AM have not been involved in any match since December 29 when they lost to TS Galaxy, with the league suspending all their fixtures when it emerged that SARS had appointed a curator to take over the day-to-day running of the team.
It is now alleged that SARS is open to bids starting at R15-million for its top-flight status.
“I am hoping that whoever buys the club they also buy the players because those players need to start working for their families, because they are breadwinners. It will be a bonus if they get another opportunity to play again.”
While the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has been exploring the possibility of expelling the Durban-based side from the Betway Premiership, the latest developments are likely to put that option on ice.
Apparently, the matter could soon be reaching finality with the executive committee believed to have their hands tied as SARS is controlling the entity.
It is alleged that few buyers are willing to table bids and negotiate a possible sale but the concern remains the number of games outstanding and the relegation to the second tier if they invest.
Sekano also does not believe the potential buyers would be willing to take a risk at this stage of the season.
“What I have heard is that we will have only 15 teams for the whole season because even if somebody buys the team, they will not be able to cover all the outstanding games. It will be too much to play four games per week but I think this is the lesson for PSL as well. Let’s look at the financials of all the teams to know that teams are ready to run their financials at the end of the day.”
