Donald Trump’s astonishing return to the White House has sent shockwaves across the world this week – including among America’s soccer community.

The 78-year-old has been re-elected as president after a resounding victory over Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election, bringing him back into power four years after his defeat to Joe Biden.

While critics have disagreed with his stance on issues such as abortion, and plan to deport millions of illegal migrants, soccer fans are furious because he will be in power for the 2026 World Cup being held in the United States.

New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in the US.

This means that Trump is odds-on to accept the honor of presenting the World Cup trophy to the winners of the competition on Sunday 19 July, 2026.

But that prospect has not gone down well with woke soccer fans.

‘Extremely s****y that Donald Trump is going to be the guy who hands out the trophy at the World Cup final,’ one said on X.

‘Wtf,’ another user posted. ‘I ain’t ready for that!’

A third commented: ‘Are you kidding me?! FIFA of course…’

While one simply said: ‘ugh’.

The first and only time the United States has hosted a World Cup, back in 1994, saw then-president Bill Clinton choose not to attend the final between Brazil and Italy in California.

Instead, vice president Al Gore had the honor of presenting Brazilian captain Dunga with the trophy at the Rose Bowl.

Trump, however, will be expected to attend the final at MetLife Stadium and take on ceremonial duties after the match himself.

Trump handing out the trophy in New Jersey would not be the first time politics has caused a stir at the World Cup.

Back in 2022, the captains of seven nations were set to wear rainbow armbands in support of the LGBTQ+ movement at the Qatar World Cup, only to ditch those plans after facing heat from FIFA.

The governing body threatened teams with sporting sanctions if they wore the armbands during games, a move which sparked major controversy at the time.

The chances of Trump presenting the World Cup trophy look certain after he met with FIFA president Gianna Infantino multiple times during his first term to discuss the tournament.

The pair also held talks about opening FIFA headquarters in the USA – which they did in 2023.

‘Congratulations Mr President!’ Infantino wrote on Instagram on Wednesday morning after his re-election.

‘We will have a great FIFA World Cup and a great FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America! Football Unites the World!’

Billiat’s name buzzing with awards potential | Kickoff

Khama Billiat has thrust himself to possibilities of awards again following an impressive season.

Khama Billiat has thrust himself to possibilities of awards again following an impressive season.

Khama Billiat’s name is buzzing as he moves towards completing his first full season playing top-league football back home in Zimbabwe.

Billiat has been a headline performer at modest Yadah FC since his arrival at the beginning of the year with his move having come after seven months without a club following his Kaizer Chiefs exit.

The 34-year-old has lived up to expectations as the highest earner in the league with 12 goals plus plenty assists that have kept him in contention for the top scorer award with two games to play.

In the race for the league’s scoring award, the leading scorer – Lynoth Chikuhwa of Highlanders – has 15 goals.

Yadah are still not completely safe from relegation with four teams going down and need all the points at home against Greenfuel on Sunday to secure their survival.

Besides the top scorer chase, Billiat is in line for the Soccer Star of the Year award, which has Walter Musona in contention.

The Soccer Star of the Year is the equivalent of the Player of the Season and plenty of the previous winners have played across the Limpopo River after winning the accolade.

That long list of previous winners has Peter Ndlovu, Wilfred Mugeyi, Agent Sawu, Tauya Murewa, Stewart Murisa, Maxwell Dube, Dazzy Kapenya, Energy Murambadoro, Josephy Kamwendo, Evans Chikwaikwai, Ramson Zhuwawo, Washington Arubi, Denver Mukamba, Danny Phiri, Rodwell Chinyengetere and Walter Musona.

However, it is only Mugeyi who has won both the two big awards – the Soccer Star of the Year in Zimbabwe (1992) playing for Black Aces and the PSL Player of the Season in South Africa (1996/97) at Bush Bucks.

Billiat won the 2025/16 Footballer of the Season award while at Mamelodi Sundowns and will join Mugeyi in winning both if he gets the Zim award this year.

The proof of how well he has done has been his return to the national team after reversing his decision to retire from international football.

On Thursday, Billiat played a blinder against Manica Diamonds despite his team suffering defeat.

Amsterdam police hold 10 in custody after antisemitic attacks on soccer fans

Amsterdam police on Friday said ten people were in custody after Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans were attacked by what Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema described as “antisemitic hit-and-run squads”.

“This is a very dark moment for the city, for which I am deeply ashamed,” Halsema said at a news conference.

“Antisemitic criminals attacked and assaulted visitors to our city, in hit-and-run actions,” Halsema said, adding perpetrators had managed to escape a large police presence.

Mamelodi Sundowns talisman Lucas Ribeiro Costa has revealed the secret behind his impressive form for the Brazilians this season.

The Brazilian started the 2024/25 campaign exactly the way he began his maiden campaign in the Betway Premiership – like a house on fire.

Injury would blight the last campaign; however, in this campaign Ribeiro has been unrelenting both in terms of scoring goals and setting up his teammates.

With six goals and four assists in 11 matches this season, Ribeiro has been in inspired form and credits it to the assistance of his teammates both on and off the field.

“Well, it’s also a great honour to receive compliments from your teammates. I am also fortunate to be part of the Sundowns structure to be here with the great team. Well, they actually helped me a lot to play well and win for sure,” he told journalists at the Carling Knockout press conference on Thursday.

“Last season we won the league and [the] AFL. It was with the assistance of my teammates. And how they assist me on the pitch and also off the pitch, so it’s always a marvellous feeling because it shows the hard work we all do and give inside the pitch and outside the pitch and I’m really happy to be part of or to be in South Africa to play the way I’ve done, with what I’ve achieved last season and how I’ve actually started the season and for sure, with expectations to continue to help the team so that we can achieve our greater goals and objectives as well as that of the team,” he said via a translator.

‘They shouted Jewish, IDF’: Israeli football fans describe attack in Amsterdam

‘They shouted Jewish, IDF’: Israeli football fans describe attack in Amsterdam

Israeli football fans have described being attacked by groups of young men in Amsterdam, with some left with injuries including broken noses.

Adi Reuben, 24, said he was kicked on the floor and had his nose broken when he and his friends were confronted by a group of over 10 men while walking back to their hotel.

The men asked Mr Reuben where he and his friends were from. “They shouted ‘Jewish, Jewish, IDF, IDF’,” he said, referring to the Israeli military.

Police say the violence involved men on scooters carrying out “hit and run” attacks which were difficult to prevent.

“They started to mess with me and I realised I had to run, but it was dark and I didn’t know where to go. I fell to the floor and 10 people were kicking me. They were shouting ‘Palestine’,” Mr Reuben told the BBC.

“They were kicking me on the floor for about a minute, then they walked off, they weren’t afraid of anything.

“I realised I had full blood on my face and my nose was broken and it is very painful.”

Mr Reuben said he could not see properly for about 30 minutes, but decided against going to hospital in Amsterdam because he had heard that taxi drivers were involved in the violence.

Instead he said he was flying to Israel on Friday afternoon and would get medical treatment there.

He added that it appeared to be “a specific attack that was organised beforehand”.

Some Israeli football fans said they were ordered to show their passports when they were set upon.

Gal Binyanmin Tshuva, 29, told the BBC he was attacked on Wednesday outside a casino after watching a different football game.

“We faced around 20 people who ran towards us. They asked me where I was from, and I said I was from Greece. They said they didn’t believe me and they asked to see my passport.

When he told them he didn’t have it, the men beat him, pushed him to the ground and kicked his face, Mr Tshuva said.

“I don’t remember anything after that, and I woke up in an ambulance with blood all over my face, and realised they had broken two of my teeth.”

British men Aaron and Jacob, who are Jewish, told the BBC they went to the match, but left early.

Afterwards, they said they saw men yelling antisemitic threats and stamping on an Israeli man. They intervened, helped the man to his feet, and went to leave.

Shortly after, a group asked the men if they were Jewish, and Aaron said that they were British.

“But they said ‘you helped the Jew’, and he punched me in my face and broke my glasses,” Aaron said.

“I was bleeding and have a black eye. I’m okay but a bit shaken.”

The BBC has seen a photo of Aaron that shows a stream of blood running down his nose, his eye swollen and other cuts on his face.

Esther Voet, editor-in-chief of a Dutch Jewish weekly newspaper, lives in the city centre. She says she offered her home to Israeli fans after she saw footage of the violence.

“I told them this is a Jewish home and you are safe here,” she told Israeli public broadcaster Kann. “People were really scared. I never thought I would go through this in Amsterdam.”

Dutch police said Israeli fans had suffered “serious abuses” during “hit-and-run” attacks, many carried out by young men on scooters.

Amsterdam police chief Peter Holla said it had proven difficult to prevent such attacks even with a significant number of officers present.

The force eventually decided to bring Maccabi supporters together and protect them before transporting them out of the area in buses, he said.

The attacks overnight into Friday followed some tensions between Maccabi fans and people in Amsterdam over previous days, officials said.

On Wednesday Maccabi fans attacked a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag, police chief Holla said.

There were further clashes in Dam Square overnight into Thursday but police were mostly able to keep the groups separate.

Some Maccabi Tel Aviv fans have previously been involved in racist incidents in Israel, including cursing at the team’s Palestinian and Arab players and reportedly applying pressure on the team to oust them.

Fans of the team have also previously attacked protesters demonstrating against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Asked about video footage appearing to show Maccabi fans in Amsterdam chanting offensive slogans, Mayor Halsema said: “What happened last night has nothing to do with protest. There is no excuse for what happened.”

Israeli soccer fans targeted in ‘antisemitic’ attacks in Amsterdam

Israeli soccer fans targeted in ‘antisemitic’ attacks in Amsterdam

Israeli soccer fans were targeted in what have been described as antisemitic attacks in the Netherlands after a match on Thursday.

Following the Europa League game between Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam on Thursday night, videos of Israeli fans being attacked circulated on social media, although Newsweek is unable to verify the footage.

How Has Israel Responded?

Israeli authorities initially planned to send two rescue planes to Amsterdam although this plan was later canceled.

The Israeli military initially wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Following the severe incidents of violence against Israelis in Amsterdam, under the guidance of the political echelon and following the assessment of the situation, the IDF immediately prepared to send out a rescue mission in coordination with the Dutch government.”

However, Israel’s military later said the rescue mission would not be taking place.

“Following the directive of the political echelon, the IDF mission will not be departing to Amsterdam,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement provided to Newsweek.

“In accordance with the situational assessment, it was decided that IDF soldiers will be prohibited from flying to the Netherlands until further notice. Exceptional requests will be examined on an individual basis.”

Following the attacks, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar “urgently flew to the Netherlands on the request of the Prime Minister on Friday morning,” according to the Jerusalem Post.

Sa’ar will reportedly meet with senior Dutch government officials, including the Dutch foreign minister, as well as Israelis and members of the local Jewish community.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the attacks, writing on X: “I followed the news from Amsterdam with horror. Completely unacceptable antisemitic attacks on Israelis. I am in close contact with all those involved. Just now in a call with @IsraeliPM Netanyahu emphasized that the perpetrators will be tracked down and prosecuted. It is now quiet in the capital.”

Newsweek reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Government of the Netherlands for comment via email.

Some social media users have questioned whether the attacks actually were antisemitic, pointing out alleged earlier incidents.

What Do Videos Show of Amsterdam Attacks?

Multiple videos show Israeli fans chanting expletives and other slogans referencing the war in the Middle East. Newsweek is unable to verify these videos.

There were also reports of a Palestinian flag being torn down by unknown individuals.

Police in Amsterdam said that they held 57 people after protesters attempted to reach the Johan Cruyff Arena where Ajax played Maccabi Tel Aviv, but were told not to protest there, with clashes occurring after the game in the city center.

Ten Israelis were injured and Israeli citizens were advised to stay in their hotel rooms, according to reports.

Sa’ar referred to the violence as “terrible barbaric and antisemitic terror attacks” which are “a blaring alarm call for Europe and the world.”

Users on social media have engaged in debates about what happened and the significance of the attacks.

Elica Le Bon, an attorney, wrote on X: “I’m so disgusted by what I just witnessed. In Amsterdam, Israelis & Jews leaving a soccer match were beaten unconscious by mobs, thrown in the river, and forced to say ‘free Palestine.’ This is the direct result of normalizing antisemitism post Oct. 7, where the most flagrant acts of Jew-hatred were cast aside as just ‘bleeding hearts who are against the war.’

“Remind me again how these are all just kind people who care about humanity. If you can’t bring yourself to speak up now—after failing the Jewish community for the past year with silence and/or by insisting that ‘globalize the intifada’ was anything other than a dogwhistle to harass Jews around the world—you have no right to call yourself a humanitarian.”

Another X user, Ori Goldberg, a former university professor in Israel, wrote: “Murderous solipsism. Israeli football fans go on a rampage in Amsterdam, tearing down Palestinian flags and shouting racist slogans. Why? Because the very presence of anything Palestinian is a threat to the integrity of the solipsistic bubble we inhabit even when abroad. Then, of course, we are surprised. How is it that when we do such things we suffer the consequences? How is it that we are attacked? How is it that the Dutch police doesn’t recognize that we are on a mission for peace, that we are good while they must be bad?”

He continued: “Events last night in Amsterdam are presented as a ‘pogrom’ here in Israel. We do not occupy the same plane of existence as the rest of you. Our actions have no implications. We can never be the cause of anything. Everything happens to us. Only we are real. Murderous solipsism.”

Israeli Soccer Fans Attacked In Amsterdam, Netanyahu Sends Rescue Planes

Israeli Soccer Fans Attacked In Amsterdam, Netanyahu Sends Rescue Planes
The Israeli Embassy in the US stated Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were attacked as they left the stadium.

Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the dispatch of two planes to Amsterdam to evacuate Israeli soccer fans who were attacked by an alleged Pro-Palestinian mob on Thursday night.

The fans had travelled to the Netherlands to watch the Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Ajax Amsterdam.

The assault began after Maccabi Tel Aviv’s loss to Ajax, with attackers targeting Israelis at various locations across the city, chanting “Free Palestine” and throwing insults in Arabic.

At least 10 Israelis were injured in the violence, with some reports suggesting that two individuals are still unaccounted for. Additionally, attackers stole passports from some of the targeted individuals.

Israel Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens in the Netherlands to remain indoors and avoid going out, while Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has asked Dutch authorities to help Israelis safely reach the airport.

Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir condemned the attacks, describing them as an act of anti-Semitism with Israelis being beaten, kicked, run-over, and even being thrown into the river.

Former Israeli special envoy Noa Tishby claimed one fan was forced to say “Free Palestine” before being released.

In response to the violence, Israel PM Netanyahu called for Dutch authorities to act swiftly to ensure the safety of Israelis, calling the incident “serious.”

Former Israel PM Naftali Bennett also called for immediate action, urging authorities to act immediately to prevent further harm.

The Israeli Embassy in the United States stated that Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were attacked as they left the stadium.
