Israel to collect soccer fans from Amsterdam after apparent antisemitic attacks

Israel to collect soccer fans from Amsterdam after apparent antisemitic attacks

Videos on social media showed riot police intervening in clashes, with some attackers shouting anti-Israeli slurs.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters were “attacked, abused and pelted with fireworks” and that riot police intervened to protect them and escort them to hotels. At least five people were treated in hospital, she said.

Security measures were increased in the city, where hundreds gathered on Thursday to remember Kristallnacht, the Nazi pogrom against Jews across Germany on Nov. 9-10, 1938.

Antisemitic incidents have surged in the Netherlands since Israel launched its assault on Gaza after the attacks on Israel by the Palestinian Hamas group on Oct. 7, 2023, with many Jewish organisations and schools reporting threats and hate mail.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the order to send planes was taken after “a very violent incident” targeting Israeli citizens after the match between Maccabi and Ajax Amsterdam, traditionally identified as a Jewish club.

“This is a serious incident, a warning sign for any country that wishes to uphold the values of freedom,” it said.

A video verified by Reuters showed a group of men running near Amsterdam central station, chasing and assaulting other men, as police sirens sounded.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said he was “horrified by the anti-Semitic attacks on Israeli citizens”, which he called “completely unacceptable”.

Schoof said he had assured Netanyahu by phone that “the perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted“.

Anti-Muslim politician Geert Wilders, head of the largest party in the Dutch government, said he was “ashamed that this can happen in the Netherlands”.

In a vitriolic post on the social media platform X, he blamed “criminal Muslims” and said they should be deported.

ISRAEL SAYS VIOLENCE RECALLS EUROPEAN POGROMS

Police said there had been incidents before the game, for which roughly 3,000 Maccabi supporters travelled to Amsterdam.

The Israeli embassy in The Hague said mobs had chanted anti-Israel slogans and shared videos of their violence on social media, “kicking, beating, even running over Israeli citizens”.

“On the eve of Kristallnacht — when Jews in Nazi Germany faced brutal attacks — it is horrifying to witness antisemitic violence on the streets of Europe once again,” it said.

Police said 62 suspects had been detained after the game as pro-Palestinian demonstrators tried to reach the Johan Cruyff Arena, even though the city had forbidden a protest there.

They said fans had left the stadium without incident after the Europa League match, which Ajax won 5-0, but that clashes erupted overnight in the city centre.

President Isaac Herzog was among senior Israeli politicians who said the violence recalled the attack on Israel by Hamas gunmen last year as well as attacks on European Jews in the pogroms of previous centuries.

“We see with horror this morning, the shocking images and videos that since October 7th, we had hoped never to see again: an anti-Semitic pogrom currently taking place against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and Israeli citizens in the heart of Amsterdam,” he wrote on X.

The Israeli airlines El Al and Arkia said two rescue flights were on the way to Amsterdam.

The Gaza war has sparked protests in support of both sides across Europe and the United States, and both Jews and Arabs have been attacked.

In March, the opening of a new Holocaust museum in Amsterdam by Herzog led to violent protests by pro-Palestinian activists.

Over 43,000 Palestinians have been killed and 102,000 others injured in Israel’s military offensive on Gaza, according to health officials in the enclave, after the Palestinian militant group killed 1,200 Israelis and took more than 250 hostage, according to Israel.

Amsterdam officials were due to hold a press conference at noon (1100 GMT).

Barca Star Still ‘Angry’ Over Forced Man Utd Move | Soccer Laduma

A player's relationship with Barcelona is still strained after they allegedly tried to force him to sign for Manchester United.

A player’s relationship with Barcelona is still strained after they allegedly tried to force him to sign for Manchester United.

A Barcelona star is reportedly still angry at the club for trying to force him to sign for Manchester United.

When Erik ten Hag first signed for the Red Devils in 2022, it was alleged that one of the players he wished to bring to Old Trafford more than anybody else was Frenkie de Jong.

The Catalan giants were still deep within their financial crisis, and with the Dutchman understood to be one of the club’s highest earners, the Spanish outfit wanted to alleviate the burden he put on their wage structure by selling him to the Mancunian giants.

Fast forward two years, and the 27-year-old is still in Catalonia. New Barca head coach Hansi Flick views him as an important player, and the club want to keep him as well, as it is believed they want to give him a new deal.

According to Sport, however, De Jong is stalling on putting pen to paper on a fresh contract because he believes he deserves the money he is owed.

One of the reasons why his wages are so high is because he is being paid the money that the club deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

His existing deal expires in 2026, and the same report states that the Blaugrana are worried that the midfielder will leave for free.

The relationship between the Arkel native and Barca is said to be strained at the moment, and that is because the Spanish giants tried to force him to sign with the record Premier League champions, which is why negotiations are so delicate.

While the Netherlands international is highly regarded, Barca are not as reliant on him as they once were, given the emergence of the likes of Marc Casado and Marc Bernal.

With the FIFA international break set to give Mamelodi Sundowns another opportunity to work on certain aspects of their game in line with the objectives of the season, the technical team has been lauded for the progress made so far.

The Brazilians have an important fixture this weekend in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals against Marumo Gallants in the Free State and that is where the focus is for the team for a chance to advance to the final.

Following that match, the champions will be preparing for the group stages of the CAF Champions League and Manqoba Mngqithi and his technical team have been commended for how well the team has been playing as they make scoring goals look simple, while being resolute in defence under the leadership of Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams in goal.

Against Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday evening, Downs kept yet another clean sheet as exciting youngster Kutlwano Letlhaku ran the show with the two goals he scored in the 2-0 victory.

Insiders have explained how a typical day of training at Chloorkop usually is in preparing for these impressive results.

“It’s all about the teamwork and the coaches share the duties. As you know, the club has quite a sizable squad and it is made up of quality players who all expect to play. So, that’s why the coach (Mngqithi) has been trying to rotate players as much as he can, with obviously the Champions League in his mind, which is a priority for him,” said the source.

“So, what usually happens in training is that Romain (Folz) would work with the attackers, and that is the strikers and attacking midfielders and so on, while Steve would take care of the defenders and so on. Obviously, coach Manqoba oversees everything, including the tactics. That’s how a typical day of training is like for the team. It has been working because Sundowns is scoring goals and defensively the team is strong,” the source said.

Israelis hurt in Amsterdam soccer riots – JNS.org

(Nov. 7, 2024 / JNS)

Several Israeli fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer team sustained minor injuries in Amsterdam overnight Wednesday during riots that broke out ahead of Thursday’s game against Ajax, local media reported.

Some of the Maccabi fans told Israel’s Mako outlet that the confrontations started when objects were hurled at them after they had left a local pub. According to the report, the Israelis responded in self-defense.

During hours-long riots that ensued, a group of Israelis took a Palestinian flag down from a residential building in central Amsterdam, with some chanting “f**k Palestine,” video footage posted to X showed.

Another clip showed what was said to be a Maccabi supporter who was pushed into an Amsterdam canal and forced to say “free Palestine.”

Amsterdam police said they had upped their presence in the city last night “following signals that there were tensions in several places in the center, possibly as a result of the upcoming match between Ajax and the Israeli club Maccabi, and AZ against the Turkish club Fenerbahçe.

“On Rokin [Street], a Palestinian flag was pulled from a house front by currently unknown individuals. On Max Euwe Square, police prevented a confrontation between a group of taxi drivers and a group of visitors who emerged from the adjacent casino,” the statement continued.

Police said that they had taken steps to guarantee a “safe and orderly” match, particularly in light of an anti-Israel rally planned ahead of Thursday’s game, which is scheduled for 10 p.m. at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

The protest, held under the slogan “No Zionists In UEFA/FIFA,” was moved away from the arena by local authorities after a group of Ajax hooligans announced they would not tolerate political statements inside or outside the stadium and threatened to “intervene where necessary.”

“In the Johan Cruijff Arena, it is about our club and our city, and we strive for togetherness. Therefore, we do not want to see flags from conflict zones and other political expressions during the Europa League match between our very own Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv FC,” they said.

Responding to Wednesday evening’s unrest, Ismail el Abassi, a Dutch lawmaker for the Islamist DENK Party, tweeted that “Netanyahu’s militias terrorized Amsterdam’s city center last night,” urging police to “arrest and prosecute this scum as soon as possible.”

Ajax is currently in fourth place in the Europa League standing, while Maccabi Tel Aviv lost their last three matches in all competitions.

Ajax’s players and supporters have long been affectionately known as “the Jews” due to the team’s large Jewish support and the rich Jewish history of The Netherlands’ capital city.
