‘I was quite good’ – Makazole Mapimpi reflects on his soccer days
Springbok winger Makazole Mapimpi revealed that he played soccer during his school years.
The 34-year-old rugby star grew up in the Tsholomnqa village, where he played both soccer and rugby in his early years. Although he pursued a career in rugby, Mapimpi mentioned that he was a talented soccer player in his youth.
In an interview with Robert Marawa on 947, he shared that he used to kick with both feet but did not specify which position he played.
Makazole Mapimpi reveals he was a baller
“I used to play soccer though back in my village when Bush Bucks still existed. We didn’t have the facilities and all these things. I think every village, there’s always people playing soccer,” he said.
“I was quite good though, I could use both feet even now. Unfortuantely I gained weight and we didn’t have soccer in school so I decided to just focus on rugby.
“I could have became a better soccer player than a rugby player as I used to kick with both my feet. I did also kick when I played for the Border, club rugby but again it depends. I was too far from the system(soccer) than the rugby stuff. I’m glad that I decided to follow rugby,” he said.
Mapimpi has 32 Boks tries to his name
Since breaking into the Springbok squad in 2018, Makazole Mapimpi has been one of the team’s most consistent players. This past weekend, he dotted down twice in the Springboks’ 32-15 win at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
Will Mapimpi push until the 2027 World Cup?

Khune Explains Relationship With The Motaungs | Soccer Laduma
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – OCTOBER 16: Jessica Motaung, Fikile Mbalula (Minister of Sport and Recreation), Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Itumeleng Khune during the SA Sports Awards press conference at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on October 16, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Itumeleng Khune says there is no love lost between himself and the Motaung family, amid negotiations regarding his future both on and off the field.
Chiefs made their intention clear when they announced their plans to absorb Khune into the club’s structures, a season before the expiry of what was the final contract of his Amakhosi tenure.
Of course, this decision went against the wishes of the 37-year-old who had an eye on continuing as a player for at least three more seasons.
Despite their inability to agree on a way forward for both parties for now, Khune says that he still keeps up to date with the current Chiefs side coached by Nasreddine Nabi and he still enjoys a productive relationship with the Motaung family.
“I do watch their games. I do support them,” Khune told the media at the launch of his partnership with TopBet.
“I
do meet up with the technical team. I do meet up with the Motaung family. I
went to attend Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns and I met with everyone and
we still cool, we talk, we hug each other but negotiations are negotiations, we
still negotiating.

“But again, there’s nothing wrong with me attending the
Kaizer Chiefs matches, I attend all the matches that I think I’m free to go and
support because I’m now a football analyst at SABC. And I’m proud to say I need
to watch all the matches I need to analyze all the players. I need to know the
club form week in, week out and. That’s my journey now.
“So whatever is gonna happen
going forward, we will see what happens. But for now, I’m enjoying what I’m
doing currently,” he added.

South Africa’s soccer president Danny Jordaan arrested on fraud and theft charges | Africanews
South African soccer chief Danny Jordaan, who helped bring the first-ever FIFA World Cup tournament to Africa, has been arrested on fraud and theft charges.
Jordaan is accused of using about R1.3 million ($72,372) of South African Football Association (SAFA) funds to hire a PR firm and a private security company for his personal benefit.
Jordaan is president of the association and led the country’s World Cup bid committee which secured the rights to host one of the biggest sporting events in South Africa in 2010.
His arrest follows a raid by the country’s Special Investigating Unit at the offices of SAFA in March “where an assortment of electronic gadgets and files were seized for further investigation, thus leading to the arrest,” police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said.
According to the police, Jordaan was arrested with one other official and a businessman. They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
SAFA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Pelé’s former club Santos returns to the top tier of Brazilian soccer with an eye on Neymar
SAO PAULO (AP) — Santos secured its return to the top tier of Brazilian soccer next year when it hopes that star striker Neymar will be back at the club which achieved a global following with Pelé.
Santos, which was relegated in 2023 for the first time in its history almost a year after the death of all-time great Pelé, secured its place in Brazil’s Serie A with a 2-0 win at Coritiba on Monday night. Wendel opened the scoring in the 20th minute and Romulo Otero added a second in the 41st.
Serie B leader Santos has 68 points in 36 matches, guaranteeing one of the four promotion places.
Santos president Marcelo Teixeira said in the early hours of Tuesday that he will wait for Neymar and his Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal to decide their future. The 32-year-old player is under contract until June.
In 2011, a teenage Neymar led Santos to their first Copa Libertadores title in 48 years. He left the club in 2013 for Barcelona.
“(We are) clear and objective, his father and his staff know it,” Teixeira told reporters at the Vila Belmiro Stadium in Santos, outside Sao Paulo. “They know me, they know Santos. We have to wait because he has an active contract.”
Teixeira added that Neymar will be welcome to the stadium on Sunday, when Santos plays CRB. A win will secure the Serie B title for Santos.
“The box is available to him, as always. If he is in Brazil, he will be welcome,” Teixeira said.
As he recovered from an ACL injury, Neymar repeatedly posted pictures and videos of himself watching Santos matches and speaking to team players. Al-Hilal said on Nov. 6 that the Brazilian is once again sidelined because of a muscular injury.

Ecuador international soccer player Marco Angulo dies aged 22 following car crash | CNN
CNN
—
Ecuador international soccer player Marco Angulo has died at the age of 22, the Ecuadorian Football Federation said in a statement.
“The Ecuadorian Football Federation expresses its deepest sympathy over the death of Marco Angulo, who with his talent and dedication defended the colours of our country at every opportunity,” the governing body wrote.
“Marco was not only an outstanding player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts, especially in those of us who went with him on countless trips, training camps and matches.
“Rest in peace, Angulito.”
The midfielder, who was on loan at Ecuadorian club LDU Quito from MLS side FC Cincinnati, had been in hospital in intensive care since being involved in a car crash on October 7.
Ecuadorian outlet El Universo reported that Angulo suffered head and lung injuries in the crash and underwent multiple surgeries.
Another footballer, Independiente Juniors defender Roberto Cabezas, also died in the crash, his club announced at the time, as did a friend.
Angulo’s last match for Quito was on October 6, a day before the crash.
FC Cincinnati said it was “heartbroken” by the player’s death.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco – a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate,” the club said in a statement.
“He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we’re thinking of and praying for his family.
“He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and he will be missed.”
Angulo played twice for the Ecuador national team, in friendlies against Iraq and Australia.
“His death is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts,” LDU Quito said in a statement.

Bigger Pirates Role For Saleng In CAFCL? | Soccer Laduma
Monnapule Saleng of Orlando Pirates during the 2024 MTN8 final match between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 05 October 2024
Samuel Shivambu, Backpages
Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng is tipped for a big role to play as the team will be campaigning in the next round of the CAF Champions League after the FIFA international break.
In some of the recent matches, Saleng has been a notable absentee from the line-ups, with questions being raised from some sections of supporters about his whereabouts.

Having last featured against Magesi FC as Pirates were knocked out of the Carling Knockout last month, Saleng missed consecutive matches in the league at home to SuperSport United and AmaZulu FC, as well as the away trip to TS Galaxy.
The 26-year-old did make a return when he came on as a substitute in the last 15 minutes against Richards Bay FC in the most recent match, and indications are that there are plans for him to feature, more like earlier in the season, where he was influential in helping the team to win the MTN8.

The good thing for the Buccaneers is that the Bloemhof-born player’s absence opened the door for the young Mohau Nkota to shine as he has been playing and has been impressive with his performances.
“That’s the good thing about having a big squad and options for all the positions. The coach can rotate the squad the way it suits the team. He (Saleng) is back and will be important in the Champions League,” said the source.
