Soccer-Go ahead and doubt us, Dias tells Man City’s critics
(Reuters) – Questions are being asked of Manchester City’s title defence after they slipped five points behind leaders Liverpool at the weekend but centre back Ruben Dias has told the critics to write off City’s chances at their peril.
City slumped to a fourth consecutive loss in all competitions with a 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, marking the first time Pep Guardiola lost four games in a row in his managerial career.
City, who are chasing an unprecedented fifth straight Premier League title, were also dumped out of the League Cup by Tottenham Hotspur.
“I would say, please doubt us, doubt us, feel welcome to do so,” Dias told British media on Monday.
“When we did the treble, we even called it the dark January. We had a tough period. But it is what it is.
“What matters is how you bounce back from these moments. That’s why our team has won so much because in moments of difficulty, the characters come up and we stay together.
“We don’t find people to kill, we find people to bring into the cause and fight together. That’s what we need to do once again. Until it’s done, it’s not done.”
City’s campaign has been hindered by a rash of injuries with Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Oscar Bobb among those facing spells on the sidelines.
They host Spurs in the league on Nov. 23 in their first game back after the international break.

France bolsters security ahead of soccer match against Israel, Greece follows suit – JNS.org
(Nov. 12, 2024 / JNS)
Israel’s soccer match with host France this Thursday will be played under heavy security in the aftermath of the attacks against Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters in Amsterdam on Nov. 7.
Authorities said on Tuesday that the upcoming UEFA Nations League game, set to kick off at 8:45 p.m. local time, is classified as an “increased security risk.”
Earlier in the week, it was announced that 4,000 officers and 1,600 stadium staff will be deployed in and around the Stade de France, the national stadium just north of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis, and on public transportation.
While the stadium capacity is 80,000, the number of fans allowed in will be limited to just 20,000.
French President Emmanuel Macron will attend the game “to show his full support for the French national team, but also to send a message of fraternity and solidarity after the unbearable antisemitic attacks following the football game in Amsterdam this week.”
Israel’s National Security Council (NSC) on Sunday issued an alert warning Israeli travelers to avoid sporting and cultural events in Europe, with an emphasis on the upcoming Israeli national team game in Paris.
Despite the NSC warning, thousands of French Jews are planning to attend the match.
“I don’t want to gift an empty stadium to haters and antisemites,” Yonathan Arfi, president of France’s Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF), told Ynet. “The worst thing we can do is abandon the field and leave it to antisemites,” he added. “We understand the NSC’s position, but this game has important symbolic significance: The stands must be full, including with French people who reject antisemitism.”
Arfi stressed however that attendees must “be cautious and pay attention to what’s happening. We aren’t diminishing the threat at all but we need to be there.”
Knesset member Yosef Taieb from the Shas Party told the Knesset’s Education, Culture and Sports Committee on Monday, as quoted by Channel 12, that “the entire Jewish community in France is currently rallying by the thousands to buy tickets and come to the Stade de France with Israeli and French flags together on Thursday. We don’t need to hide from anyone, and we should support our team.”
Greece boosts security ahead of Maccabi basketball match
Security is being beefed up ahead of other sporting events in Europe involving Israeli teams in the wake of the attacks in Amsterdam, which followed a game against Ajax in the Europa League. Ten Israeli citizens were injured in the attacks.
AFP reported that Greece has heightened security measures for a Euroleague basketball game between Panathinaikos and Maccabi Tel Aviv on Tuesday.
A police source told the news agency that around 1,500 police would be deployed for the game at the Athens Olympic Indoor Hall. Part of the force will be assigned to Maccabi fans and anti-terror officers will escort the team bus. The Israeli embassy in Athens will also be assigned additional security.
Meanwhile, UEFA announced on Monday that the Nov. 28 Europa League match between Besiktas and Maccabi Tel Aviv has been moved from Istanbul to Debrecen in Hungary.
“The match will be played behind closed doors, following a decision of the local Hungarian authorities,” the governing body of European soccer said in a statement.

Juan Mata’s agent has brutally lambasted Western Sydney Wanderers manager Alen Stajcic claiming that the football coach’s treatment of the ex-Manchester United star was ‘disgusting’.
The Spanish midfielder’s arrival at the club this September was greeted with great excitement among fans, with Stajcic having described the defender as a ‘priceless’ addition to the squad.
The 36-year-old is one of the most decorated players in world football having won a World Cup and a European Championship with Spain, while also winning the Champions League and Europa League.
Man United in 2022, Mata has struggled for game time, having gone on to play for both Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe.
He made just 22 appearances across all competitions for both sides, averaging a meagre 29 minutes per game sparking worries over his fitness following his arrival in Sydney.
Juan Mata’s agent has slammed an Australian football coach for his treatment of the ex-Man United star
Alen Stajcic brought Juan Mata on for less than 10 minutes during his side’s win against Newcastle Jets on Friday
Mata’s agent is former footballer Fahid Ben Khalfallah, who played for Brisbane Roar, Melbourne and Troyes
While Mata has attempted to allay those concerns, Stajcic has previously suggested that the physicality and pace of the A-League could have caught the former Premier League star and several other members of his team off guard.
The Spaniard, a graduate of the Real Madrid academy, has made four league appearances this season for his new club, starting in two of those games. He was subbed off at half-time during his side’s recent defeat against Adelaide United before going on to play for eight minutes, during his side’s win against Newcastle Jets on Friday.
And his lack of game time appears to have infuriated his agent, Fahid Ben Khalfallah.
‘I think it’s just insane… I don’t understand,’ Khalfallah fumed while speaking on the A-League Off Air podcast.
‘When you bring [in] someone like him, you have to play him in a system that suits him. I couldn’t believe he only came on for eight minutes or whatever.’
Stajcic revealed after the Newcastle match that he was still trying to ‘work out’ his best eleven and where Mata fits into the team.
But Khalfallah continued: ‘I think it’s disrespectful. I hate it. I really, really hate it because it makes no sense to me.
‘And I’m so sick, so sick of those coaches saying, ‘Oh yeah, but the intensity (of the A-League)’… OK, we will talk about someone who won the World Cup, won the Euro, Champions League, played in England for 10 years – he’s always been one of the most intelligent and most technical players of his generation.
There was much fanfare around Mata’s (centre) arrival at the club with Stajcic (right) having lauded the midfielder’s work rate
But Mata’s agent has criticised the coach for the lack of playing time Mata has received since joining
‘He wasn’t quick, he wasn’t the strongest. So despite that, he was one of the best players in the world.
‘And we’re talking about A-League intensity? You must be kidding.
‘Put horses on the pitch, they will be running – but they can’t kick a ball, and they can’t play. They can’t pass the ball.
‘Seriously, I’m disgusted to hear that kind of stuff.’
Mata was seen putting ice on his foot after being subbed off after 45 minutes against Adelaide United last week.
Speaking after the match Stajcic had claimed the midfielder had ‘pulled up a little bit sore’, before noting that several other players in his side were wearing ice packs.
He added: ‘It’s the intensity of the A-League; I’ve said this many times over, it’s quite deceptive.
‘It’s a high-intensity football game, probably one of the most intense leagues around the world.’
Questions had been raised over Mata’s fitness prior to his arrival at the club, after he had struggled for game time with former club’s Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe
Stajcic revealed after the Newcastle match that he was still trying to ‘work out’ his best eleven and where Mata fits into the team
Stajcic, though, has previously lumped praise on Mata and what he’s brought to the team since joining the club.
‘He’s everything that we thought he was going to be, and more,’ he said.
‘Going back to human qualities and values, he’s brought in a tremendous amount already.
‘He’s so humble, He’s come in, and been willing to work hard and willing to learn, and been willing to spread his knowledge across the group.
‘His humility in and around the team is exactly the kind of culture that [Sydney’s] western suburbs people really appreciate and enjoy, not just our playing group, but the whole community.
‘And that’s not even talking about his qualities on the pitch. The leadership he brings on the pitch, the calmness, the composure, people learning from him in terms of his decision making and his movement, is exceptional.
‘He’s really an inspiring figure to have in the group.’

Paris will deploy 4,000 police officers for the France-Israel soccer match following the Amsterdam violence – Voice of the Cape
By Kouthar Sambo
Paris will deploy 4,000 police officers for the France-Israel soccer match following the Amsterdam violence. Paris police confirmed on Sunday that 1,600 stadium staff will be deployed for a France-Israel soccer match to ensure security in and around the stadium and on public transportation. The decision comes after a week of violence against Israeli fans in Amsterdam, though Israeli fans have behaved in a provocative manner as well.
Speaking on VOC’s PM Drive, sports analyst Hassen Lorgat said it is believed the Israeli fans “pulled down the Palestinian flags.”
“If anyone wants to be blaming and pointing fingers, they should look at those who always want to be the victim. There are videos making the rounds online, showing how aggressive the Israeli fans were, climbing high to take down the Palestinian flag, defaced homes, and damaged things,” expressed Lorgat.

African Women’s Champions League boosts soccer development
It’s no secret that women’s sports, particularly from the perspective of team sports, is still trying to catch up to the structures and benefits enjoyed by the men in equivalent codes – from development pipelines, to opportunities for growth at those young and crucial ages, even via factors such as sponsorship and coverage, which ultimately play a pivotal part in the financial compensation of the athletes.
Global standards
In Europe, huge strides have been made over the past few decades. One example is the high-quality soccer regularly on display in the women’s English top-flight, the Super League.
And the US, which has long been the benchmark for quality women’s soccer, has generally continued on an upward trajectory, while countries such as Australia and Colombia have grown in stature, as shown by the displays at the 2023 Fifa World Cup.
Yet, in Africa, the chasm between men and women remains jarring. A number of women soccer players based in Africa – despite investing a significant amount of time and effort into their craft – usually have nothing to show for it financially.
In fact, sometimes these talented athletes incur financial loss just to be able to play their beloved sport.
Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has regularly lamented the fact that most of the players she has to choose from in the local Hollywoodbets Super League usually have full-time occupations to sustain themselves and their families as they pursue their passion of playing the sport.
Therefore some have struggled when called into the national team, despite shining at club level. Competitions such as the African Women’s Champions League are integral in helping to foster change.
Battle of the best
First played in 2021, the Champions League marked a significant and deliberate step by the Patrice Motsepe-headed Confederation of African Football (Caf) to grow women’s soccer on the continent.
Before his ascension to Caf president, the club’s owner, Motsepe, had turned Sundowns into one of the most well-run women’s sports teams in Africa.
These days it is run by Motsepe’s son, Tlhopie. Under his leadership Sundowns have won two of the past three editions of Africa’s premier women’s club competition. In 2024, they are aiming to make it three out four editions by defending the crown they clinched a year ago.
It won’t be easy, as Sundowns found out after falling to debutants Masar in their opening game this year. The Egyptians dug deep to beat Banyana Ba Style 1-0.
“The level of competition has improved drastically in the last two editions. Teams have become more tactically aware, and there’s been a huge progress,” Sundowns coach Jerry Tshabalala told Caf’s media department.
“More clubs are investing in their women’s teams. We have seen teams like Simba Queens and TP Mazembe, which has raised the overall quality of play. The tournament is more competitive than ever, and this demands that we keep evolving,” Tshabalala added.
Sundowns, who are grouped with Nigeria’s Edo Queens and Ethiopian side CBE in addition to Masar, are one of two South African teams at the Morocco-hosted tournament.
Masandawana qualified automatically as defending champions, which left a gap for another southern African side to qualify. This honour went to fellow South Africans, the University of the Western Cape.
“It’s a huge milestone for women’s soccer in South Africa to have two clubs in the CAF Women’s Champions League this year. It shows that our domestic league is growing in strength and that we are producing talent capable of competing at the highest level in Africa,” Tshabalala said.
“This can only benefit the overall development of the women’s game in South Africa and inspire more investment and growth,” he added.
In another milestone, the prize money for the competition has grown substantially in 2024. The overall pool to be shared among the eight participating teams is $2,350,000 (about R43-million), an increase of 52% from 2023. Each club is guaranteed at least $150,000 (R2.7-million), while the winners walk away with $600,000 (R11-million).
The fact that the best African men’s club will pocket almost four times that shows the gulf between the two sports. Yet, Caf is clearly heading in the right direction and these strides will eventually trickle down to the local level of the involved clubs. DM

Real Madrid Make ‘Big Call’ On Ramos | Soccer Laduma
Real Madrid have reportedly decided against re-signing Sergio Ramos.
Real Madrid have reportedly made a decision on whether to re-sign legendary centre-back Sergio Ramos.

Los Blancos are reportedly in urgent need of a central defender following Eder Militao’s second anterior cruciate ligament injury, but despite the availability of their former captain, the Spanish giants will not be turning to their former captain.
The 38-year-old Ramos, who left Sevilla last year after his contract expired, is yet to find a new club and has not announced his retirement. In the wake of Militao’s injury,
Ramos posted a video on Instagram showcasing his impressive physical condition, leading to speculation that he could be a viable option for Madrid, especially as a free agent.
However, despite the natural link to the club, Diario AS report that Real Madrid have decided against re-signing their iconic defender.
According to the Spanish outlet, a decision was made by the club’s board and president on Sunday afternoon, with the unanimous conclusion that Ramos’ time at the Santiago Bernabéu has come to an end.
The club feels that Ramos is no longer at the level required to contribute at the highest level, and re-signing him would also mean mending fractured relations following his controversial exit in 2021 after protracted and tense contract negotiations.
While Ramos may have been an immediate option, the decision is clear: Real Madrid will not be signing him as a stopgap solution.
Instead, the club has already begun identifying other potential targets to reinforce their defensive options, though it seems any signing will have to wait until the January transfer window.

In the meantime, Madrid will rely on the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Jesus Vallejo, Raul Asencio, and Aurelien Tchouameni to fill in at centre-back. Asencio, in particular, impressed on his debut last Saturday, earning a clean sheet and an assist after replacing Militao during the match.

NEW: Salah Linked With Shock Club | Soccer Laduma
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has been linked with a shock move to Turkey.
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has been linked with a shock club in Europe ahead of the expiration of his contract in England.
Check Out: Official: Barcelona Confirm Bad Lamine Yamal News
Galatasaray are reportedly making moves to secure the services of the African superstar, whose contract with the Premier League giants is set to expire at the end of the current season.
The transfer rumour mill has been in overdrive following a social media post from Salah last week, which sparked speculation about his future.
Shortly thereafter, reports surfaced linking the Egyptian international with a potential summer move to Barcelona. These rumours were quickly followed by claims that Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal were intensifying their efforts to bring the forward to the Middle East.
Now, it appears that Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray have thrown their hat into the ring with an official offer for the 32-year-old.
According to Turkish publication Fotomac, Galatasaray have already held talks with Salah’s representatives, with the club eager to explore a deal.
The report suggests that the Turkish champions are willing to offer Salah a lucrative contract, potentially worth €20 million (R379 million) per year, with additional sponsorship backing to help seal the deal.
This move follows hot on the heels of Galatasaray’s headline-grabbing loan signing of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. With their sights now set on Salah, the club are clearly looking to make another statement by adding one of world football’s most recognised forwards to their ranks.
However, the Turkish side will undoubtedly face stiff competition for Salah’s signature, with other high-profile clubs likely to enter the race as the season progresses. Should Galatasaray pursue the deal, they will need to navigate significant interest from both European and Middle Eastern suitors for the prolific forward.
Salah, for his part, has been in scintillating form for Liverpool this season, continuing to demonstrate his invaluable worth to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

In just 16 matches across all competitions, the Egyptian has netted nine goals and provided nine assists, playing a key role in Liverpool’s strong start to the campaign under new manager Arne Slot.

Broos Gives Insight Into Latest Bafana Replacement | Soccer Laduma
DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – SEPTEMBER 01: Devin Titus of Stellenbosch FC during the MTN8, Semi Final, 2nd Leg match between Stellenbosch FC and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on September 01, 2024 in Durban, South Africa. (Photo by Darren Stewart/Gallo Images)
He may be coming in as a replacement, but Stellenbosch FC attacker Devin Titus cannot be ruled out of getting some valuable minutes on the pitch for Bafana Bafana, if Hugo Broos’ comments are anything to go by.
Titus was part of Bafana’s first training session at Dobsonville Stadium on Monday afternoon ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan, after coming in as a replacement for injured Mihlali Mayambela.
READ: Should Khune Consider Coaching? Legend Speaks…
Titus has been knocking on the national team door and has an opportunity to impress Broos, who has a history of rewarding players who show potential in national team colours.
With 17 matches this season, backed by his three goals and two assists, Titus is in the right type of form to show what he can do if given an opportunity to play in any of the upcoming qualifiers.
“We had to make a change in the selection because Mayambela is out with an injury. He is replaced by Devon Titus. I think when you see the performances of Devon and Mayambela is injured, I don’t see another player who can replace. He played a very strong season. He scores, he’s very quick and can dribble players. He is a very dangerous player. You can’t say anything bad about the choice of Devon Titus,” Broos said during a press conference held at Dobsonville Stadium on Monday.
“If I need him, I am sure he will help us. But I am sure of it because he has a certain talent and that is eliminating a player, scoring. So, he can help us if we need him.
Three points will be enough to book a spot for Bafana against Uganda away from home on Friday. Should they fail to collect points, then they’d have to wrap it up in the final qualifier against South Sudan on home soil next Tuesday.

“We are aware of the importance of the two games in front of us. Two games of qualification and after those two games it’s finished. Being the bronze medalists of the last AFCON and looking at the opponents in the group, I think it would be a little shame if we can’t qualify. We need three or two points to have security,” Broos said.
Overseas based duo Siyabonga Ngezana and Luke le Roux, meanwhile, are expected to join the squad on Tuesday
