Interim manager Ruud van Nistlerooy made three changes in his final game in charges, as Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford were recalled to line-up, as Alejandro Garnacho started on the bench.
The home side broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Bruno Fernandes capped his 250th appearance for the club with a lovely strike from the edge of the box after getting on the end of Amad Diallo’s flick.
Leicester, meanwhile, did look a bit lively at times in the first half and they carved out a big chance after 28 minutes when Wilfried Ndidi was slipped through on goal, however the midfielder was denied by Andre Onana.
The visitors were made to rue that miss as United doubled their lead seven minutes before the break when Fernandes completed his brace by nodding home a cross from Noussair Mazraoui.
Van Nistlerooy opted for a double change in the early stage of the second period, with Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot making way Garnacho and Jonny Evans.
Onana came to United’s rescue with 20 minutes to play as Jordan Ayew did well to carve out some space in the box before seeing his low strike tipped away by the Red Devils shot-stopper.
The Red Devils did bag a third goal with nine minutes left on the clock as Garnacho bagged his seventh goal of the campaign with a superb curling effort from the edge of the box.

Here’s a recent soccer story from the AP:
MILAN, Italy (AP) — Arsenal will be without Declan Rice because of injury for the Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday but could welcome back captain Martin Odegaard after two months out.
Rice sustained a foot injury in the 1-0 loss at Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday and has not traveled to Italy. He will be assessed ahead of the league match at Chelsea on Sunday.
“It is a knock, a problem on his foot, and he wasn’t comfortable to put his boots on so at the moment he is not fit,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said of the England midfielder.
“He wasn’t feeling good the last few days. We’ll have to assess him on Thursday and see if he’s ready for Chelsea.”
Odegaard is set for an imminent return following an ankle injury he picked up when playing for Norway in a Nations League group-stage match on Sept. 9.
Odegaard practiced with his teammates at Arsenal’s training base on Tuesday before heading out to Milan.
Arteta said it was the first time his captain had taken part in full training since the injury.
“He’s back a bit earlier than we expected,” Arteta said, “but it’s great to have him here and we will decide if we use him tomorrow.”
Arsenal has won two and drawn one after three games in the revamped Champions League, but is winless in its last three Premier League matches.

ACC Men’s Soccer Quarterfinal Preview: No. 9 Pitt vs Virginia
ACC Men’s Soccer Quarterfinals
Pitt (12-4-0, 6-2-0 ACC)
vs.
Virginia (9-5-3, 3-3-2 ACC)

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Ambrose Urbanic Field

PSN Coverage: Brentaro Yamane
They’re back — and this time as the top seed in the ACC Tournament after securing the ACC regular season title, finishing two points ahead of runner-up and last season’s National Champions, Clemson.
That’s right, the Pitt Panthers men’s soccer program will begin quest through the postseason on Sunday night, when they host No. 9 seed Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship. The winner of Sunday’s match will advance to the semifinals, facing either No. 4 seed SMU or No. 5 seed Wake Forest, in Cary, NC, on Wednesday.
Pitt concluded its historic 2024 regular season with a 12-4 ledger, including a 6-2 mark in ACC play.
Pitt was picked to finish ninth in the league prior to the season, but with veteran Head Coach Jay Vidovich doing more masterful work in adding more talented pieces to the roster and guiding senior leaders who truly grabbed the bull by the horns, this year’s squad has shown it’s very capable of making a deep run through November and December, both in the ACC tournament and in the NCAA tournament too.
With a strong start to the season, Pitt caught lightning in a bottle, spending three weeks as the No. 1 team in the nation and clinching their first regular season ACC title in program history, setting them up for home playoff matches in the conference (and almost certainly the national) tournaments.
But, it won’t be easy.
The ACC tournament will provide a gauntlet of talented teams — none of whom they can take lightly, even Sunday’s opponents, Virginia, who they defeated a few weeks ago, by a 4-1 margin.
Taking Care of the Dirty Work: Pitt men’s soccer seniors spur a championship run
Following last season’s disappointment in the postseason (first round losses at home in both ACC tournament and NCAA tournament) served as a sort of wake up call, spurring the Panthers (and especially their veteran leaders) to take nothing for granted as they head into knockout round phases of the program’s revitalized season.
“The guys that were here last year, they really [hurt their] pride [after] what happened,” Guilherme Feitosa, senior midfielder, told Pittsburgh Soccer Now‘s Griffin Floyd.
“They were like ‘I don’t want to be part of a losing program, I don’t want to be part of a program that loses in the early stages of the NCAA Tournament.’ And us coming back with that mentality also raises the level of the guys at the bottom of the group.”
Vidovich also said that his seniors’ willingness to take on the “dirty work” of coaching, holding each other to a higher standard after lackadaisical or selfish play burned them in 2023, helps make his life easier.
“It makes your job easier, it allows you to do different things. That means they’re taking care of a lot of the dirty work. This team is self-policed, it really does take care of a lot of the dirty work you don’t have to do,” Vidovich said. “When individually they’ve got that ambition to also police themselves, and then when the collective is doing it, that’s when you have something magic. And we’re hoping to get there.”
Virginia Cavaliers: A Closer Look
Pitt has played in the ACC Tournament Final just one time (a loss at Clemson in 2021) — so lifting the conference tournament hardware is something that this program would love to do — and they’ll get started in this quest by taking on Virginia in a rematch of its 4-1 victory on Oct. 25 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
With that victory, Pitt snapped Virginia’s five match winning streak, which was the third-longest streak in Division I coming into the match.
Defensively, Pitt limited Virginia to only five shot attempts with just one coming on frame. Of note, Virginia came into that match averaging 12.9 shots per game.
The ninth-seeded Cavaliers have since bounced back and are coming off a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over eighth-seeded and 21st-ranked NC State on Wednesday.
Virginia tallied a pair of second half-goals in a 20-second span. The win marked UVA’s first comeback win in the ACC tournament since a 3-1 win over Clemson in the 2019 title game.
Virginia’s Nick Dang leads the Cavaliers this season with six goals on the year. Dang’s goal tally currently ranks first among defenders in NCAA Division I.
PITT MSOC MATCH NOTES
No. 1 in RPI
Despite dropping three of its last five matches, Pitt holds the number one spot in the latest RPI rankings. The Panthers own an impressive 6-1 record in quadrant 1 matches and have five wins over teams ranked in the top 20 of RPI.
National Rankings
Pitt ranks seventh in the country in goals against average (.750) and 15th in goals (36). The Panthers also rank sixth nationally in goal differential (26). Individually, senior midfielder Guilherme Feitosa ranks second in the ACC and 12th nationally with nine assists this season.

Sundowns brought back most of the regulars that were rested in a league win over Polokwane City in midweek, as only goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and Peter Shalulile retained their places, as they were joined by the likes of Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Iqraam Rayners and Teboho Mokoena.
The game got off to a bright start as Masandawana took the game to Gallants but it was Dan Malesela’s charges who had the first chance on 12 minutes after Daniel Msendami forced a one-handed save from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with a powerful strike.
Manqoba Mngqithi’s charges increased their intensity in attack and on the half-hour mark, Peter Shalulile came close to breaking the deadlock with a header that missed narrowly wide.
The Tshwane side had the momentum as they forced Gallants to defend deep in the latter phase of the first stanza but they could not open up their defence as the sides went to the break deadlocked.
Sundowns had a perfect start in the second stanza as Costa eventually broke the deadlock eight minutes from the interval with a cheeky penalty after a handball in the box by Marvin Sikhosana.
Malesela’s men were fired up and Thapelo Dhludhlu had a big chance midway into the second stanza after he went clear on goal but could not beat Williams in a one-on-one.
Gallants wanted to continue with their momentum in the closing stages as they made a tactical and attacking change, with Gabadinho Mhango coming on for Monde Mphambaniso.
Mngqithi went for a different approach and fresh legs in attack ten minutes before time as Kutlwano Letlhaku and Arthur Sales both came on for Rayners and Shalulile.
Siwelele Sa Marumo put Masandawana under pressure in the dying minutes but they were caught in added time as Neo Maema made it 2-0 for the Tshwane giants with a strike into the top corner.
The Brazilians will play against Magesi in the final.
Here’s how they lined up:
Marumo Gallants: Arubi, Sikhosana, Mabotja, Nthatheni, Sithole, Msendami, Dhludhlu, Manaka, Shai, Mphambaniso, Khumalo

Dutch PM to miss climate summit during probe into soccer violence | News.az
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof will miss the COP29 climate summit after clashes in Amsterdam this week between Israeli soccer fans and pro-Palestinian protesters as his government investigates if warning signs from Israel were missed, News.Az reports citing Reuters .
“I will not be going to Azerbaijan next week for the UN Climate Conference COP29. Due to the major social impact of the events of last Thursday night in Amsterdam, I will remain in the Netherlands,” he said on social media platform X.
Dutch Climate Minister Sophie Hermans will still attend the Nov. 11-22 environment meeting while a climate envoy will replace Schoof, the premier added, saying Thursday night’s violence in Amsterdam would be discussed at Monday’s cabinet meeting.
In a second day of meetings during a last-minute trip prompted by the unrest, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar met his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp on Saturday.
Saar held talks with Justice Minister David van Weel and far-right leader Geert Wilders when he arrived on Friday.
