CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – The high school year is nearly over, but that doesn’t mean the signings are quite yet.
Three Lady T-Bird soccer players are headed to the next level; Haley Pierson and Zoey Woods are both going to continue playing in the capital city at LCCC, while Esa Moreno will be competing for York University in Nebraska.
Moreno’s faced a lot of adversity the last few years– three separate ACL tears– and she’s grateful for the opportunity to make her comeback and keep playing the sport she loves.
”I had other colleges asking me if I wanted to go there, and then I tore again and they were all like ‘no.’ They were like ‘you’ve torn three times, no.’ But York– I have family that went there, and they knew the head coach and he just had a daughter who tore last year. He was like ‘we want you to come, you’re going to be redshirted, it’ll be ok.’ They do PT every day, so I feel like I probably should do that for myself,” Moreno said.
Moreno’s third ACL tear came just three games into her senior season, but that didn’t stop her from attacking her rehab and supporting her teammates along the way.
Woods is another player who’s dealt with severe injuries in the past– missing the majority of her junior year, but she was able to come back this season and play 16 out of East’s 17 games. Woods was key on both ends of the pitch for the Lady T-Birds with her role continuing to increase as she recovered more. She’ll be joined at LCCC by Pierson, who was one of the elite midfielders in the state. Pierson’s play earned her a second straight all-state nod as one of East’s main facilitators, and will continue to command the Golden Eagles offense.
LCCC head coach Lugo Arenas has been very active in recruiting Cheyenne talent– and there will be some existing chemistry built in not only with Pearson and woods– but with some players going there from Central as well.
“In September of last year I was talking to Lugo, and he was like ‘I’m really interested in you.’ I went out and did my tour, I really liked the girls, I love his coaching, and I just decided that I wanted to be close to home,” Woods said.
”It’s definitely nice because [the familiarity] makes me more comfortable with it– to go in knowing that they’re coming with me. A lot of the girls– even the Central girls– I’ve played with for years, since I was little. So it’s nice to have them there and be able to continue to play with them,” Pierson added.
Congratulations to Esa Moreno, Zoey Woods, and Haley Pierson on their signing.
