Oct. 17—JEFFERSON — The third time was the charm for the Edgewood Warriors against the Jefferson Falcons.

The Warriors put together a strong match and defeated the Falcons 3-1 at Falcon Pride Stadium in a Division II boys soccer sectional match.

The two Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division rivals met twice during the regular season, and Jefferson won both matches — 1-0 on Sept. 7 and 4-1 last Thursday.

Edgewood coach Greg Myers said his team came with a good mindset on Monday evening.

“We kind of new what their game is,” Myers said. “I think the kids stepped up and played their hearts out. I am very proud of them.”

Geno Measel opened the scoring for the Warriors on a breakaway that found its way into the right side of the net, just out of the reach of Jefferson goalie Reagan Williams.

Cole Billington and Noah Hommes also scored for Edgewood.

The Warriors, as the 20th seed in their sectional-district, advance to a sectional final against top-seeded Canfield at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Myers said he is happy how the CVC has drawn Ashtabula County teams together during this soccer season.

“I think it was good we got to play closer and [play] county rivals,” he said.

The 50-minute bus rides to Niles and Poland got to be difficult, Myers added.

The Warriors are 7-9 going into Saturday’s game.

Jefferson coach Jim Valtman said he tried to pull out all the stops. He moved Jenson Yarosh closer to the goal to try and score in the second, half but it didn’t work out.

“We had a lot of opportunities,” Valtman said. “We didn’t cash in on them.”

Valtman said he really enjoyed the new soccer league as well.

“I think it was exciting,” he said of playing local rivals.

Valtman said he was pleased with the season other than losing 8-0 to Kirtland. The Falcons ended the season at 9-5-4.

“We pretty much held our own after losing seven seniors,” he said.
