WATCH | Soccer ball and boots donation for homeless Alberton north teenager | Alberton Record
March 10, 2025

The NPO, Boots for Africa, reached out to an Alberton North teenager by giving him much-needed soccer boots and a ball.

The handover took place at Ligstad a community organisation in Alberton.

Homeless people and some community members from Alberton North’s informal settlements were among those in attendance to witness this special gift handed over to one of their own.

The session started with the prayer of the community leader, Eric McKechnie. Other members of Alberton’s Life on the Streets (Lots) took to the podium to encourage attendees to put faith in God.

Kamohelo Kharametsa (16) is a homeless teenager on the streets of Alberton North who hopes to use his soccer skills to lift himself out of poverty.

A Grade Eight learner at Thoko Thaba Secondary School in Thokoza, Kamohelo is a shy teenager with a keen interest in soccer. Asked for a picture by the Alberton Record, Kamohelo struck an awkward pose, hiding his face.

Boots for Africa’s Buti Mokokeng took it upon himself to get Kamohelo a soccer ball and boots. Mofokeng also relayed a story of his years as a homeless child on the streets and how he used to hang around the old Alberton Station on Railway Road and other informal settlements in Alberton North.

“I used to get food at this church (Ligstad), so it feels like déjà vu for me,” said Mofokeng.

“Boots for Africa received an invitation from LOTS (Life on the Streets) about Kamohelo, who loves football. We are here to motivate him and see how best we can assist him with his footballing career.

“We know life is difficult, and as Boots for Africa, we attempt to help one child at a time and make sure that we help them realise their dreams,” added Mofokeng.
