It’s a full schedule for high school girls soccer — as WPIAL section competition heats up on Monday.

Here’s a couple matches we’ll be watching closely:

Class 3A — Fox Chapel vs Mars — With last year’s Class 4A champion Fox Chapel moving down in classification to Class 3A, one of the teams they drew into their section for this realignment cycle is one of the most successful WPIAL soccer programs in the past 20 years, Mars.  The Foxes are off to a 4-0 (3-0 in section) start to the season, but they’ve yet to be tested by some of the top programs in Class 3A yet.  They’ll have their first tests this week as they travel to Mars on Monday then host Hampton. The Fighting Planets (5-0-0, 2-0-0 in section) are off to an outstanding start to the season too, including a hard-fought 1-0 win vs Hampton last week.  Foxes Head Coach Carlo Prati has plenty of talent returning from last year’s squad, led by senior Alyssa Quackenbush who returns to the midfield, along with senior Maddie Grimsley, with a talented sophomore up top in Emily McKee.  Blair Gerlich’s program at Mars has always been deep, so as we watch some of their more prominent players from recent years feature at the college level, the roster has reloaded with players who continue to make life difficult for opponents to score.  Leading this Mars’ squad are seniors Julia Lishia and Brynn Ramsey.  Expect this to be a tight affair, as was the case with a lot of the battles between the top Class 3A sides last year. Already this season, in nine combined matches, neither side has conceded a goal in section play this season (Mars did concede one to Kiski Area in non-section match.

Class 2A — Beaver Area vs Avonworth — While much attention should go to Avonworth in Class 2A, and they certainly deserve all of it as the three-time defending WPIAL champs and feature All-State midfielder and Alabama commit, Fiona Mahan. Avonworth (3-2-1, 2-0-0 in section) have already played a challenging non-section schedule, but thus far it’s hasn’t been easy.  After beating Hopewell, 3-0, they needed extra time to fend off Central Valley, 2-1.  The Lopes’ know they have a challenge on Monday — as they’ll be facing a Beaver Area squad that is without a loss and hasn’t given up a goal this season. And their one common opponent, Beaver Area defeated Central Valley, 3-0.   The Bobcats return a strong roster filled with experience and playing time under fifth-year head coach Nick Crivelli. Returnees include a trio that includes playmaking midfielder Sydney Chontos plus Lilia Battalini and Ana Hahn, who all tallied 11 goals in 2023. Also players to watch for Beaver include Lyra Kuhlman and defender Antonella Brkich.
