The Carling Knockout took centre stage this past weekend, with Magesi FC causing the upset of the tournament so far by knocking out ‘cup specialists’ Orlando Pirates in the round of Last 16 with a 3-2 win.
Coach Clinton Larsen’s charges went into this clash as underdogs, as they have not had the best of starts to their first campaign in the elite league after being promoted from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season. However, they started impressively and were deserved winners after the final whistle, with the match officials doing well on the day, despite Pirates’ protests from time to time, as their players kept questioning the referee’s decisions.
The Natal Rich Boys beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament and will be hosting Cape Town City in the next round.
Coach Eric Tinkler’s The Citizens beat Royal AM 3-0 to secure their spot in the next round and will be fancying their chances away to the Natal Rich Boys.
Mamelodi Sundowns were the biggest winners with their 5-0 thrashing of Lamontville Golden Arrows, sending out a strong message of intent as they look to do better in this campaign when compared to the last one where they fell short.
Kaizer Chiefs hammered SuperSport United 4-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals where they will be hosting Sundowns in a much-anticipated clash of the round.
Marumo Gallants put their bad start to the league on hold when they beat Polokwane City 3-2 while defending champions, Stellenbosch FC beat AmaZulu FC 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals. Stellies will be away to Gallants in the quarter-finals.
Last season’s runners-up, TS Galaxy beat Chippa United 1-0 to progress to the quarter-finals where they will host Magesi.
