‘Rappers and yodellers’: Nagelsmann strikes balance in Euro 2024 squad – Soccer America
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said he had struck the right balance his Euro 2024 squad, saying veteran Thomas Mueller linked the team’s “rappers with the yodellers” while praising man of “steel” Toni Kroos.
Nagelsmann named 27 players for the home tournament, with the squad to be cut to 26 after friendlies against Ukraine on June 3 in Nuremberg and Greece four days later in Moenchengladbach.
At the announcement made in downtown Berlin just near the famous Brandenberg Gate, Nagelsmann said the 34-year-old Mueller — who he coached at club level during his stint as Bayern Munich manager — tied the group together.
“Thomas is a connector, he can connect the groups together. He can link the rappers with the yodellers.”
After the coach informed Mueller he was included, the veteran “sent me a funny message — it showed me how much we need him around.”
Mueller responded on social media saying he was “hugely looking forward to the Euros in our own country.”
“I’m ready to whip in and step on the gas … I’m on the starting blocks.”
Nagelsmann said Kroos “may not be 20 anymore” but praised the Real Madrid midfielder’s physique, saying “if you hug Toni Kroos, it feels like he’s made of steel”.

Kroos, 34, and Mueller, along with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, remain from Germany’s 2014 World Cup win in Brazil, but Nagelsmann left fellow world champion Mats Hummels out of the squad.
Hummels and midfielder Julian Brandt have been key figures in Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final, where they will face Real Madrid at Wembley in June, but Nagelsmann preferred to stick with the team which beat France and the Netherlands in March.
Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka was also left out of the hosts’ 27-man squad while club teammate Serge Gnabry was not considered because of injury.
‘We can win the tournament’
Eliminated at the group stage in the past two World Cups and at theroundl of 16 at Euro 2021, three-time Euro winners Germany had a poor 2023, winning just three of 11 games, which cost then-coach Hansi Flick his job.
After losses against Turkey and Austria to end 2023, Nagelsmann named a heavily changed squad for the March friendlies, including bringing in players from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen and in-form Stuttgart.
Germany impressed as a result with wins over 2022 World Cup finalists France and the Dutch.
“We made very few changes to the group because we did well,” Nagelsmann said on Thursday.
“I have the feeling that we can win the tournament. And most of the time, my intuition is not too bad.”
Nagelsmann has now brought in Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck and Stuttgart goalkeeper Alex Nuebel for Heidenheim’s Jan-Niklas Beste and injured Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.
Bayern’s Leroy Sane, who missed the March friendlies through injury, has also been added to the squad.
Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will remain captain despite Neuer’s return, which Nagelsmann had already confirmed prior to the announcement.
The Euros start on June 14, with Germany facing Scotland in Munich.
Germany goes into a pre-Euros training camp in the central village of Blankenhain — where England will be based during the tournament — from May 26 until June 1.
Four members of the squad — Dortmund’s Schlotterbeck and Niclas Fuellkrug, along with Real Madrid duo Antonio Ruediger and Kroos — play the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1 and will not take part.
Nagelsmann confirmed the four will join the squad two days after the Champions League final.

Detroit City Football Club’s newly-announced stadium could turn city into a home for soccer
Detroit’s semi-pro soccer team building new stadium
DCFC games have been played at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck since 2016. Since then, they’ve attracted millions of dollars and crowds of screaming fans. Further validating their place as a growing franchise is the team’s promotion to better leagues. Now, they’re planning to move to Detroit for an even bigger venue.
The team is ecstatic. The fans are right up there with them.
“It’s fantastic,” said Erik Olson, who owns Thomas Magees Sporting House.
Delivered via press release, DCFC said it had bought the site where the former Southwest Detroit Hospital was located. It closed in 1991 after 17 years of operating and has been left vacant ever since.
While the Hamtramck field has been a good home to the team, “players, staff, and supporters deserve a stadium with modern amenities that retains the best elements of Keyworth while also putting the club on firmer financial footing,” said Alex Wright, a co-owner of the team said.
Both Olson and Thomas Magees will be ready when they officially open.

Three soccer players arrested over alleged match-fixing involving yellow cards in Australian league
SYDNEY (AP) — Three A-League players were arrested Friday for alleged betting corruption after police claimed they manipulated the number of yellow cards they received in games last year, Football Australia said.
New South Wales state police began an investigation in December 2023. Six months later, detectives have revealed that a “senior player” was alleged to have been taking instructions from a man — believed to be based in South America — to organize players taking yellow cards during matches for money.
Police have not publicly identified any of the players who have been charged, but investigators said all three are attached to a club based in southwest Sydney. They were scheduled to appear in court later Friday.
Police say yellow cards were manipulated during games played on Nov. 24 and Dec. 9 of last year. They also allege unsuccessful attempts were made during matches on April 20 and May 4.
Local media said police executed a search warrant at South Coogee, in Sydney’s east, on Friday, and arrested a 33-year-old man. Two men, aged 32 and 27, were arrested in Sydney’s western suburbs.
Media reports quoted police as saying the oldest of the trio is expected to be charged with two counts of engaging in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event and two counts of facilitating conduct that corrupts a betting outcome.
The other two players are set to be charged with engaging in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event.
Football Australia said it has been “made aware of the arrests of three A-League men players.”
“Football Australia is fully cooperating with the Organized Crime Squad, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Sport Integrity Australia and the New South Wales Crime Commission in this matter,” it added in the statement.”
