Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Fuellkrug fired in a firsthalf goal to seal a 10 victory over visitors Paris St Germain in a compelling Champions League semifinal first leg on Wednesday.

DORTMUND, Germany:Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Fuellkrug fired in a first-half goal to seal a 1-0 victory over visitors Paris St Germain in a compelling Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

Nico Schlotterbeck floated a pass into Fuellkrug’s path and the Germany forward controlled the ball with a perfect first touch before drilling a low shot past keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 36th minute.

PSG, fresh from being crowned Ligue 1 champions and desperate to win their first ever Champions League trophy, found it hard going against a disciplined German defence, especially in the first half with forward Kylian Mbappe largely neutralised.

With the return leg in Paris next Tuesday, the winners of the tie will face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, who drew 2-2 in their first leg in Germany, in the final at Wembley on June 1.

“It was a well-deserved win, a good team performance,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. “We could have scored more goals, but so could they.”

“That’s why the result is OK from my point of view. We ran a lot, but that’s necessary in a game like this.”

“You have to earn your way to Wembley. All we need now is a draw in the second leg, but we also want to win next week.”

The win also confirmed Germany will get a fifth qualifying spot for next season’s Champions League, with Dortmund being the main beneficiaries at the moment, sitting in fifth place in the Bundesliga with three games left to play.

Dortmund went close just before halftime with Marcel Sabitzer but his shot was blocked by Donnaruma. The French side improved after the break and went agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 52nd minute with Mbappe curling a shot onto the far post and then Achraf Hakimi also hitting the woodwork on the rebound.

Four minutes later Fabian Ruiz saw his stooping header sail wide after being left completely unmarked in the box before Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel kept out Ousmane Dembele’s close range effort in the 71st.

Dortmund, winners in 1997 and looking to reach their first final since 2013, soaked up the pressure as PSG’s Vitinha narrowly missed the target 10 minutes later.

Vermilion’s Livia Penton continuing soccer career with Cleveland State commitment

Vermilion’s Livia Penton continuing soccer career with Cleveland State commitment

In a family filled to the brim with soccer talent, Vermilion senior Livia Penton always stood out. Her two elder siblings, her sister Kayleigh and her brother Logan, both went on to play college at the Division I level prior to Logan’s transfer to John Carroll. Her younger brothers both are at Vermilion in the boys soccer program.

She achieved remarkable success with the Sailors, becoming the school’s all-time leader in career goals, assists and points at the end of her last game in the fall, with 107 goals, 46 assists and a total of 260 points.

It took a little bit of time, but Livia Penton will be the third Division I collegiate soccer player among the Penton kids, as she announced her commitment to Cleveland State on Instagram April 25 to continue playing the game she loves.

“I’m super relieved,” Penton said on a phone call April 26. “The process was very long, but ultimately it’s really rewarding. I’m excited to get started next year. The level of competition is going to be high but I’m excited for the challenge – and a new home for the next four years.”

When Cleveland State came calling for Penton, the school checked off a few important boxes that made it the right fit for the outgoing senior.

“Obviously it’s really close to home. At first, I didn’t want to stay close to home,” Penton explained, adding, “In the end, I think it’s the best decision for me.

“On my official visit, the team was super welcoming and so were the coaches. They really wanted me to be a part of the family, which was all really great. It was overall just a great environment.”

At least one former travel season teammate from Strongsville will be a familiar face for Penton, pitching to the Vermilion star how they loved the Vikings’ environment. It was a hectic senior year that was capped off the right way with the Division I offer coming her way.

“This soccer season was definitely my favorite,” she said. “There were a lot of people who made it special for me — from my teammates, Coach Matt (DeCapua), my family and people just being super supportive around the community. Everyone’s shown me a lot of support, so I’m super grateful.”

With her decision coming just before college decision day, Livia is happy with her final choice and following in the footsteps of the elder siblings she looked up to all those years ago as a kid.

“Growing up, I always went to my sister’s games at Akron and my brother (Logan’s) games when he was at John Carroll and Oakland. I’ve always wanted that for myself and I’m just really excited to get started.”

Indianapolis commission gives first approval for city’s new MLS stadium plan

Indianapolis commission gives first approval for city’s new MLS stadium plan

The Metropolitan Development Commission on Wednesday almost unanimously advanced a resolution to create an alternative professional sports development area for a stadium for a proposed Major League Soccer team in downtown Indianapolis.

The resolution was read into the commission’s minutes and passed by a 7-1 vote as part of a package of other resolutions. Commissioner Daniel Moriarty cast the opposing vote on the new professional sports development area but voted in favor of the other items. No public discussion took place.

More: Indianapolis wants an MLS team, here’s how the expansion process works

The city has identified 355 E. Pearl St. as the site for the new soccer stadium. A professional sports development area is a designated geographic area that creates a special taxing district. A specific facility or venues within the area are designated for sports-related purposes, professional sports teams or other entertainment. Designated businesses within one square mile of the sports venue are included in the area and tax dollars from within the geographic area would pay for the stadium.

“We are excited to have taken the next step toward realizing Mayor (Joe) Hogsett’s vision for a Major League Soccer expansion club in Indianapolis,” Aliya Wishner, communications and policy director for Hogsett’s administration, said in an emailed statement. “This is just an early step in an extensive process, and we look forward to walking alongside our city’s vibrant and diverse soccer community in developing an application that we hope will secure Indianapolis as the next Major League Soccer city.”

Wednesday’s vote begins a new process to get a professional soccer team to the city. The resolution will go to the Indianapolis City Council next month. An identical process took place last year for a 20,000-seat stadium that would house the Indy Eleven, a minor league soccer team, at the planned Eleven Park, a mixed-use development on the former Diamond Chain Co. property on Kentucky Avenue, near the White River.

That stadium would be financed via a public-private partnership. The commission and city council approved a professional sports development area and plan for the Eleven Park site late last year.

Almost a week ago Hogsett announced that he would lead a new effort to bring an MLS team to Indianapolis, casting uncertainty on the future of the Indy Eleven and Eleven Park.

City officials said at the time that the Eleven Park professional sports development area, which has yet to be submitted to the state budget committee, would not generate enough dollars for the stadium to cover the project’s funding gap.

Still, they wanted to seize on the city’s momentum as a destination for sports to make a bid for an MLS expansion team. The franchise’s owners would be given the option to decide whether to build a stadium on the Diamond Chain site or the alternative site, city officials say.

However, whether the Diamond Chain site would even be an option is unclear. Eleven Park is the brainchild of businessman Ersal Ozdemir, founder of the Indy Eleven and the project’s developer Keystone Group. Ozdemir lobbied for the legislation that paved the way for building of a soccer stadium — the same legislation the city is using for the alternative site.

Last week, Keystone accused the city of trying to walk away from Eleven Park and shopping the legislation around.

From IndyStar Opinion: Don’t weep for Indy Eleven, writes James Briggs

Dozens of people wearing T-shirts that said “Build Eleven Park” filled the chambers Wednesday as the commission voted on the new resolution. They filed into the hallway immediately after the vote where they huddled around City Councilor Kristin Jones as she spoke to media. A spokesperson for Keystone Group was present as well as some City Council members.

Jones, who represents the district where Eleven Park would be built, said she would like to see the project come to fruition, adding that the Hogsett administration should honor the existing professional sports development area.

“This is about my community. This is about my neighbors. This is about the many fans that showed up today to show this city that they want the original PSDA and allocation area, and honor the commitment that we’ve already passed,” Jones said, reading from a statement with supporters behind her. “They want Eleven Park to be built as planned, regardless of which jerseys are worn on that field. They asked for nothing more, that they expect nothing less.”

Soccer-Ancelotti unhappy with Real’s attitude in draw at Bayern

Soccer-Ancelotti unhappy with Real’s attitude in draw at Bayern

MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) – Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was disappointed with his players’ attitude, calling them “soft” for defending too deep in their 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final, first leg on Tuesday.

Ancelotti was critical of his team’s commitment after Vinicius Jr’s first-half goal gave them the lead as Bayern struck twice in four minutes early in the second half to turn the game around before Vinicius equalised from the penalty spot.

“The result is good but on a level of play we could have done better. Bayern showed their best version and we didn’t. We have to improve for next week,” an introspective Ancelotti told Movistar Plus+.

“In the first half we defended but with little intensity, in the second half when they took the lead we started to press a bit more, but not enough.

“The feeling was that we were comfortable, but we lacked intensity. We gave them too many chances to take control of the game. We didn’t want to play in a low block and we went on doing that. We were soft.”

Ancelotti defended his decision to substitute midfielder Toni Kroos, who set up Vinicius’ opener with a brilliant pass and was arguably Real’s best player.

The Italian said that he made four substitutions in an effort to shake his team up and was relieved that they ended up scoring the equaliser that he believes “left the tie open” for the return leg in Madrid next week.

“Jude Bellingham had a cramp, Toni Kroos played a spectacular game but the plan was to try to recover the control of the game by putting fresh legs in,” Ancelotti told a press conference.

“As always, at this point in the season we have a great opportunity to play in another final. It’s an even tie against a great team. It will be another 90 minutes of suffering but in an atmosphere that we know quite well. The fans are going to help us.”

Soccer-Bayern ready for winner-takes-all match at Real, says Tuchel

Soccer-Bayern ready for winner-takes-all match at Real, says Tuchel

MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) – Bayern Munich were victims of Real Madrid’s lethal efficiency in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw but the Germans are ready to beat them in next week’s Champions League semi-final return leg in Madrid, coach Thomas Tuchel said.

The Bavarians struck twice in four minutes early in the second half with a shot from Leroy Sane and a Harry Kane penalty to turn the game around after Vinicius Jr had put the visitors ahead in the 24th against the run of play.

The Brazilian striker also bagged an equaliser with an 83rd minute spot kick as Bayern were pushing for a third goal.

“The result is what it is and it’s not worth spending any time thinking about it,” Tuchel, who will leave Bayern at the end of the season after a disappointing domestic campaign, told a press conference.

“Real have done it before, to score twice with two chances. We are not the first team to suffer that. They have the finish, they have the quality to do that.

“We had a strong start then we lost a bit our rhythm. We should have scored a third but we were not efficient enough, not cold enough to add a third. Then we gifted them a penalty.”

Bayern enjoyed a strong start and also had chances to score again after going 2-1 up. They will now need to win against Real, who are chasing a 15th European Cup, in Madrid next Wednesday if they are to advance to the final at Wembley.

Borussia Dortmund and Paris St Germain face each other in the other semi-final on Wednesday.

“The situation is now very clear,” Tuchel added. “We go to Madrid and the winner takes it all. We are ready to fight. It is important to believe that.

“It is still possible. It is 50-50. It is one of the toughest places to win but that is also what makes this challenge exciting.”
