Soccer-Chelsea maintain hope of final WSL title under Hayes with win at Spurs

Soccer-Chelsea maintain hope of final WSL title under Hayes with win at Spurs

LONDON (Reuters) -Chelsea took charge of the Women’s Super League title race with one game remaining after a 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday put the reigning champions top of the standings on goal difference.

Maika Hamano’s 37th-minute strike into the roof of the net from a brilliant Guro Reiten cross was enough to give manager Emma Hayes hope that she will end her glittering tenure at the club with one last piece of silverware.

Chelsea, who have won the last four WSL titles, will say goodbye to Hayes at the end of the season as the 47-year-old takes charge of the United States women’s team after 12 years in West London.

Robert Vilahamn’s Tottenham, nursing their wounds after losing the FA Cup final 4-0 to Manchester United on Sunday, tried to mount a comeback in the second half but lacked a clinical edge in the final third.

Chelsea moved top of the standings on 52 points, the same as second-placed Manchester City but with a superior goal difference of two ahead of Gareth Taylor’s side.

It all comes down to the final day on Saturday when Chelsea travel to Old Trafford to face United while City play at Aston Villa. On paper, Chelsea’s fixture looks more daunting, however, United and Villa both have little to play for but pride.

Hayes, who appeared to concede the title earlier this month before City slipped up at Arsenal last weekend, cut a relieved figure after the fulltime whistle at Brisbane Road.

“I think we have the tougher of the two games. We have to go to Old Trafford and it’s a fitting finale for me, being my final game,” Hayes told the BBC.

“As I said to the players if someone gives you a second chance in life, make sure you don’t need a third one. We’re in the position we want to be in, and we’ll give it everything on Saturday no matter what.”

After six league titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups Hayes suggested it was a good time to leave the club.

“I won’t swear but I’m absolutely knackered,” she said.

Soccer-Chelsea climb to sixth with 2-1 win over Brighton

Soccer-Chelsea climb to sixth with 2-1 win over Brighton

BRIGHTON, England (Reuters) -Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku struck either side of halftime to earn Chelsea a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, sending the London club into the final day of the Premier League season in sixth place.

Palmer turned in Marc Cucurella’s cross with a powerful header in the 34th minute to claim the 22nd league goal of his outstanding debut season and put the visitors in front at the Amex Stadium.

Nkunku side-footed home Malo Gusto’s cutback in the 64th minute to double Chelsea’s lead, but they then lost substitute Reece James to a straight red card for a petulant kick out at Joao Pedro in the 88th minute.

Danny Welbeck snatched a goal back for the hosts when he latched on to Pedro’s cross in the seventh minute of stoppage time, ensuring a frenetic end to the match, but Chelsea held on to win a fourth consecutive league game for the first time this season.

Cucurella, who was given a torrid reception by the home fans on his return to his former club, thought he had earned a penalty when he went down following a corner in the 15th minute, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check.

Victory sent Chelsea into their final match against Bournemouth on Sunday with hope still alive of qualifying for the Europa League, despite a horrendous start to their campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men began the season with one win in their first six league matches and three in their first 10, but are finishing strong, with just one defeat in their last 14 league outings.

Brighton, who are 10th, end the season at home to Manchester United.

Eisenhower girls soccer clinch third-straight MAC Red title with win over Dakota

Eisenhower girls soccer clinch third-straight MAC Red title with win over Dakota

For the third straight year, Eisenhower is the MAC Red Division girls soccer champion.

The Eagles clinched their third-consecutive league title by blanking visiting Dakota 3-0 on Wednesday night.

“Every year we work hard, play hard and it’s an honor to win the MAC Red,” Eisenhower coach Mehrdad Nekoogar said. “You never know with the district, as tough as it is, what is going to happen. All these teams (in the league) are good and to clinch it in only our eighth game is a huge accomplishment for us, especially with having three starters out for the season.”

Eisenhower scored the only goal it would need with 13:54 left in the opening half when Ellera Jakubowski scored off an assist by Maryn Smith. Ava Dukaj extended the lead to 2-0 five minutes later, scoring off a crossing pass from Jakubowski.

“Ava and Ellera have been scoring a lot of goals for us,” Nekoogar said. “I think they both have 18 or 19 goals. They do a very good job leading this team and putting them on their shoulders. There’s a lot of pressure on both of them, but they deliver.”

The Eagles added an insurance goal 13 minutes into the second half when Charlotte Long scored off an assist by Smith, her second helper of the game.

“Maryn is a freshman for us and has done a great job for us this year,” Nekoogar said. “She’s going to get better. Our team has been playing so well. I can’t complain.”

Dakota coach Gary Schodowski said his team entered the game with several injured starters out and it was hard for his squad to get on the same page.

“With key starters out, the communication out there has not been great,” Schodowski said. “It hurts. It’s not like we’ve been a very strong finishing team this season, but we have been solid defensively. We have three injured off the back line.

“Once the first goal happened, the girls start looking at each other different,” Schodowski added. “It’s a challenge for us.”

Eagle goalkeeper Molly Mellott made one save in the match, earning the shutout. The win improved Eisenhower’s record to 11-1-1 overall and 8-0-0 league. With districts set to begin in a week or so, Nekoogar said his team must play better if they want to contend for a state title.

“They tried to make quick decisions and play possession the way I like them to,” Nekoogar said. “Dakota is a good team and had some injuries tonight. I know if we play like we did tonight, we can’t rely on two or three players to score all our goals. We have to play better than this.”

Dakota goalkeeper Brooklyn Perron made three saves in the loss, which dropped the Cougars’ record to 6-4-5 overall, 4-2-3 league.

“We just need to have some time to heal,” Schodowski said. “We have a lot of little injuries right now that are plaguing us.”

Soccer-Gomis has no regrets about not playing alongside Neymar at Al-Hilal

Soccer-Gomis has no regrets about not playing alongside Neymar at Al-Hilal

(Reuters) – Former Al Hilal striker Bafetimbi Gomis said he has no regrets that he never got a chance to play alongside the club’s current talisman Neymar as he won numerous titles during his 3-1/2-year stint with the Saudi Pro League champions.

The Frenchman won seven titles with Al-Hilal including the Saudi Pro League three times and AFC Champions League twice before leaving the club in early 2022. He now plays for Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale.

Neymar completed his transfer from Paris St Germain to the Saudi giants last August.

When asked whether he would have won more trophies if he had shared the pitch with Neymar, the 38-year-old Gomis told Reuters: “There is no need to look at things this way. I won everything with Al Hilal with the best players.

“I scored many goals and we won everything. There is no more to achieve,” added the former Swansea City player.

Al-Hilal won a record-extending 19th Saudi Pro League title earlier this month and also clinched the Saudi Super Cup title in April. They will be hoping to complete the treble by beating Al-Nassr in the Saudi King’s Cup final.

“The league now has many players such as Neymar, (Kalidou) Koulibaly, Aleksandar Mitrovic, (Cristiano) Ronaldo, and (Karim) Benzema,” he added.

“This is an opportunity for the league to improve and ‮develop local players’ performance‬.”

Sluggish first half dooms Cheboygan soccer’s chances against NMSL leader Ogemaw Heights

Sluggish first half dooms Cheboygan soccer’s chances against NMSL leader Ogemaw Heights

WEST BRANCH – The Cheboygan girls soccer team was hoping for a much better result against Ogemaw Heights than the first time the two teams played earlier this season.

But the Northern Michigan Soccer League-leading Falcons had other plans in mind, hammering the Chiefs in a 6-0 home victory on Wednesday.

The Chiefs (9-3-2, 9-3-2) had all sorts of trouble in the first half against the Falcons, who dominated enough to build a 4-0 lead at the break.

“We played a tough second half, and kudos to (our goalkeeper) Mia Davis, who made some huge saves,” Cheboygan coach Tom Markham said. “If she doesn’t make some of those saves, it most certainly could have been worse. Ogemaw had good speed and toughness, and it just wasn’t our night.”

Late last week, Cheboygan used two goals from senior Taylor Bent, who netted a game winner with about six minutes left in a 2-1 victory at Clare.

After the Chiefs surrendered a Clare goal eight minutes into the second half, Bent equalized just a few minutes later. Recording assists were Morgan Davis and Ava Baldwin.

Amber Gahn was the winning pitcher, striking out eight and allowing five hits in six innings.

However, the Chiefs suffered a 7-2 loss in game two. Bea Schulz, Laney Marsh, Mastin, Stockman and Gahn each recorded a hit.

Crawford took the pitching loss, striking out eight and scattering nine hits in six innings.
