Soccer-Southampton east past West Brom to reach playoff final

Soccer-Southampton east past West Brom to reach playoff final

SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) -Southampton moved a step closer to returning to the Premier League with a 3-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion in the second leg of their Championship playoff semi-final on Friday to reach the final 3-1 on aggregate.

Russell Martin’s side will face Leeds United, who beat Norwich City 4-0 on Thursday, at Wembley on May 26 for a place in the top flight.

Having dominated the first half, Southampton took the lead four minutes after the break when Will Smallbone shot home off the post following a counter-attack.

“What a win. It was a tough game, West Brom are a tough side,” Smallbone told Sky Sports.

“The manager put a lot of faith in me this year and I can’t speak highly enough of what he’s done for me and my career. It’s been my dream to be here playing for as long as I can remember and to do it right now is amazing.”

The Championship’s second top scorer Adam Armstrong extended the advantage with a low shot in the 78th minute before sealing the rout from the penalty spot four minutes from time.

“It’s amazing and something we’ve been working on all year, to get back to the Premier League. We were gutted we didn’t make the top two, but if we can go up this way, what a way it will be,” Armstrong said.

Cedric Kipre grabbed a consolation for West Brom with a last-gasp header.

Leicester City and Ipswich Town won automatic promotion to the Premier League after finishing as Championship winners and runners-up.

Soccer-Marta celebrates Brazil hosting 2027 Women’s World Cup

Soccer-Marta celebrates Brazil hosting 2027 Women’s World Cup

(Reuters) – Brazil’s all-time leading scorer Marta celebrated her country’s selection to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup on Friday and called for the opening match to be played in Rio Grande do Sul, which has been devastated by recent flooding.

Brazil was chosen by the FIFA Congress to stage the tournament, beating a joint bid from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany to become the first South American nation to host the event.

“I was very happy with the news and I’m sure that the 2027 Women’s World Cup will be a success, and the Brazilian people, as always, will be with open arms to welcome the world soccer community,” Marta said in a video on social media.

The 38-year-old midfielder, a six-times Women’s World Player of the Year, is retiring from international football this year.

“If it were possible, I would like the Brazilian national team’s first match to be in Rio Grande Sul. The state of Rio Grande do Sul deserve it,” Marta added.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) suspended two rounds of the Brazilian Championship due to the floods that have killed more than 150 people, according to state government figures.

With her soccer career on the line, Audrey Hartmann delivers ‘amazing ball’ to set up Naperville North’s win

With her soccer career on the line, Audrey Hartmann delivers ‘amazing ball’ to set up Naperville North’s win

Naperville North senior midfielder Audrey Hartmann was feeling tired.

It was the 80th minute of the game, and the 80-degree temperature had taken its toll.

But with the Huskies’ season on the brink and her soccer career in danger of ending, Hartmann knew she had to do something after intercepting a clearing attempt in the midfield.

“I knew there was not a lot of time in the game left, and I knew I had to get the ball forward and it had to be a really great ball,” she said. “We needed to put one in the back of the net.

“I’m a senior. If we didn’t win, I would have been out. So I was giving it everything I had, and so was everyone else on the team.”

The serve Hartmann sent into space would be called an ace in tennis. Sophomore forward Claire DeCook raced to it from the left wing, got to the ball a split second before Waubonsie Valley senior goalkeeper Lauren Bornhoff did and ripped a 16-yard shot off the right post and into the net with 43 seconds remaining.

It was the 13th goal of the season for DeCook. It stood up as the game-winner as the third-seeded Huskies rallied to win the Class 3A East Aurora Regional championship with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the sixth-seeded Warriors on Friday.

“It was an amazing ball from Audrey,” DeCook said. “I saw that she was going to open up her hips, and I knew there were no other runners in.

“I was super close to the goalie. I used so much momentum, it kind of dinged the post a little bit. So even though everyone was celebrating, I did tap it in just in case because you never know.”

Indeed, nothing is ever certain in soccer, especially in the playoffs. Naperville North (13-5-4) had routed Waubonsie Valley 5-1 just 10 days earlier.

But the Warriors (10-8-2) took a 1-0 lead when Taylor Ahmadian scored off an assist from fellow senior forward Eleanor Oster with 34:51 left in the second half.

The lead stood until senior forward Annie Chang tied it for Naperville North off an assist from junior midfielder Isa Polavieja with 19:48 to go.

Overtime appeared inevitable, but Hartmann and DeCook somehow summoned enough energy.

“An absolutely fantastic goal by Claire,” Naperville North coach Steve Goletz said. “We ask the world of her. We probably ask her for more than is possible. But with 40 seconds left in the game, she’s exhausted, but she still makes the run, and if she doesn’t make the run, we’re going to overtime.

“That’s the difference — to make the run, have the composure to finish. I’m super happy for her.”

Hartmann was happy for DeCook but not surprised she scored.

“That’s just Claire,” Hartmann said. “It was a great combination, and I think without our team effort, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

“What’s so great about our team is everyone works to the final seconds and we never give up. And if Claire didn’t make that run, we wouldn’t have finished.”

Instead, the Huskies won their 13th consecutive regional title and advanced to the Plainfield North Sectional semifinals, where they will take on the winner of the Saturday game between second-seeded Metea Valley and seventh-seeded Naperville Central at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“It means so much,” DeCook said. “It’s an expectation to win this every year. We set those high standards, so obviously every year, no matter how good this team is, it’s always going to be hard because we have amazing competition.

“I know it doesn’t get any easier from here, so we just have to keep raising that standard.”

It’s a standard boosted by relatively unheralded players like Hartmann, whose efforts in the midfield often go unnoticed and unrewarded on the stat sheet. The assist on DeCook’s game-winning goal was just her second point of the season.

Hartmann said she had some offers to play college soccer but turned them down in order to study nursing at Indiana. That’s why she’s savoring every moment of Naperville North’s playoff run.

“I’m going to focus on my academics,” Hartmann said. “So it’s going to be a really hard goodbye. That’s why I’m giving everything I have for these last few games, because I want to win state.”

Chatham Glenwood girls soccer rallies to thrilling 2A regional title, and other results

Chatham Glenwood girls soccer rallies to thrilling 2A regional title, and other results

Here are the high school girls soccer regional final and sectional semifinal results around Springfield for Class 2A and 1A on Friday:

Playoff brackets: Here is the 2024 high school girls soccer playoff schedule for Springfield area teams

CLASS 2A

NO. 2 CHATHAM GLENWOOD 3, NO. 3 SPRINGFIELD HIGH 2: At Glenwood, the host Titans summoned their biggest comeback of the season with the 2A regional title on the line.

Glenwood (14-6-1) rallied to a 3-2 victory over Springfield High after surrendering the game’s first two goals.

Glenwood junior standout Rowann Law poured in the first two goals before twin sister, Rylann, unleashed the go-ahead goal with 16 minutes, 13 seconds remaining.

“She (Rowann) got the momentum going and we kept building and building, and we finally got it,” Rylann said.

2A defending champs: What to know about Chatham Glenwood’s new defense after winning 2A girls soccer state title

Rowann scored her first goal on a penalty kick following a hand ball induced by Rylann to pare the deficit to 2-1 by halftime.

Rylann subsequently drilled the post but Rowann mopped up the rebound following a free kick prompted by a yellow card in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Rylann later blasted the deciding goal inside the near post and the reigning 2A state champions escaped with the win.

“We talked about it at halftime,” Rylann said. “We have to pressure, pressure their backs and it allowed us to fluster their defense and we made our goals from it.”

Challenge accepted: Why Pleasant Plains girls soccer has what it takes to compete in 2A this year

Glenwood coach Jay Lipe credited the midfielders such as Makenna Yeager, Lyla Franke and Karley Hawkins for turning the tide with possession. The Titans advance to the Pleasant Plains Sectional semifinals against Saturday’s winner between No. 1 Mahomet-Seymour and No. 4 Lincoln on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

“Rowann and Rylann scored our goals tonight, but hands down I think the difference as we got midway through the first half is we started to play harder,” Lipe said. “Springfield just really outworked us in the first 20 minutes and that’s a credit to their kids. They came out with no fear.”

Springfield High sophomore Kamryn Hoffman scored the opening goal in the first nine minutes before assisting to freshman Kalyn Burton less than four minutes later.

SHS (15-8) was without senior starters Maddie Foster and Lily Lambert.

“Unfortunate breaks,” SHS coach Pat Phillips said of Glenwood’s first two goals, “but you can’t give a good team those two dead balls. It’s unfortunate, but I’m proud of the way the girls played, especially that first half.”

Senators blending in: How Springfield High girls soccer found its groove again

CLASS 1A

NO. 1 SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 7, NO. 2 GREENVILLE 1: At Riverton, Caroline Sheehan chalked up the hat trick and the Cyclones (20-5) will meet No. 2 Quincy Notre Dame for the sectional title on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Sheehan supplied the first two goals, assisted by Sophia Paul and Emma Johnson, and SHG took a 3-0 lead into intermission after Norah Long’s assist to Johnson, who later scored again in the second half on an assist from Ali Fleischli.

Solid midfield: Why Sacred Heart-Griffin girls soccer is turning up the pressure this season

Long assisted Sheehan’s final goal before scoring herself on an Isabella Perryman assist. Samantha Perryman also scored on Anne Mizeur’s assist.

In the other action, QND’s Makayla Patton dashed No. 1 Alton Marquette with a goal in overtime to reach the sectional final.

NO. 1 WILLIAMSVILLE 7, NO. 3 MONMOUTH-ROSEVILLE 0: At Williamsville, Brooklyn Termine totaled four goals and the host Bullets advanced to Tuesday’s sectional final against No. 2 Bloomington Central Catholic at 7 p.m.

Calynn Frye chipped in two goals while Madison Rigdon also scored.

NO. 2 BLOOMINGTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC 3, NO. 1 ATHENS 2 (PKS): At Williamsville, the Saints (16-7) prevailed 3-2 in penalty kicks after a scoreless tie in regulation and two overtimes.

The match was delayed during the first half due to lightning. Athens ended 17-5-1.

Soccer-Napkin used by Barcelona to sign Messi sold for nearly $1 million

Soccer-Napkin used by Barcelona to sign Messi sold for nearly $1 million

(Reuters) – The napkin on which Barcelona promised to sign Lionel Messi when he was a 13-year-old has been sold for 762,400 pounds ($969,000, auction house Bonhams said on Friday.

The napkin was signed in December, 2000 by Barca’s former sporting director Carles Rexach and transfer advisor Josep Minguella along with Argentine agent Horacio Gaggioli over lunch at a tennis club.

Messi became one of Barcelona’s greatest players, winning over 30 trophies and leaving the Catalan club as their all-time leading scorer with 672 goals.

He also won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards for the world’s best player and led Argentina to the World Cup crown in 2022. Messi now plays for U.S. club Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

“Yes, it’s a paper napkin, but it’s the famous napkin that was at the inception of Lionel Messi’s career,” Ian Ehling, the head of fine books and manuscripts at Bonhams New York, said in a statement.

“It changed the life of Messi, the future of FC Barcelona, and was instrumental in giving some of the most glorious moments of football to billions of fans around the globe.”

Controversial boxer Ryan Garcia posed for a picture with Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. while on his current vacation in Saudi Arabia.

Garcia is the Middle Eastern country for the heavyweight prize fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, where an undisputed heavyweight champion will be determined.

A day ahead of the main-event bout, Garcia attended the Saudi Pro League match between Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr against Al-Hilal.

On the grounds for the match is where he ran into Ronaldo Jr. and snapped a photo with him. Garcia is wearing an Al-Nassr jersey in the photo.

Garcia’s appearance comes less than a month after his controversial win over Devin Haney in a super lightweight title fight.

Garcia defeated Haney in a super lightweight bout last month with plenty of controversy

Garcia defeated Haney in a super lightweight bout last month with plenty of controversy

More than a week after his win over Haney, Garcia reportedly tested positive for the drug Ostarine the day before his victory.

Garcia denies taking the performance-enchaining drug and insisted on being tested again for it.

Haney’s title was not on the line in the bout as Garcia missed weight, but he did end Haney’s undefeated streak to begin his career at 31 wins.

Earlier this week Haney requested to the New York State Athletic Commission that the result of his fight with Garcia be overturned due to the positive test.

Haney’s attorney argued that Garcia had an unfair advantage in the fight due to missing weight in addition to the possible use of a performance-enhancing drug.

Al-Nassr scored in the first minute of its game against Al-Hilal, but settled for a draw with the equalizer being scored against them in the 100th minute.

Haney will likely be ringside for Fury’s first title defense in nearly 18 months.

The winner of Usyk-Fury will be the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000.

Soccer-Juventus fire coach Allegri for misbehaviour in Italian Cup final

Soccer-Juventus fire coach Allegri for misbehaviour in Italian Cup final

MILAN (Reuters) -Juventus sacked coach Massimiliano Allegri over his behaviour during and after this week’s Coppa Italia final in which he was sent off, the Italian Serie A club said on Friday.

Juventus beat Atalanta 1-0 to win a record-extending 15th Coppa Italia on Wednesday, their first trophy in three years.

Allegri was sent off towards the end of the game for his fierce protests over refereeing decisions.

After the game, the 56-year-old clashed with match officials, Juventus staff and a newspaper director, Italian media reported.

“Juventus announces that it has relieved Massimiliano Allegri of his position as head coach of the men’s first team,” the club said in a statement.

“The dismissal follows certain behaviour during and after the Coppa Italia final that the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus and the behaviour that those who represent it should have.”

The Italian football federation is looking into the events during the Cup final.

“We can confirm that an investigation on incident (that) happened during the Coppa Italia Final, in which … Allegri and Tuttosport newspaper’s director Guido Vaciago were involved, is in due course amongst the FIGC’s Prosecutor Office,” FIGC said in a statement sent to Reuters.

Allegri first became the Turin club’s coach in 2014 and led the team for five seasons, before returning in 2021 after taking two years away from management.

During his first spell, Juve won five consecutive Serie A titles and four Italian Cups.

They also finished as Champions League runners-up twice in 2014-15 and 2016-17.

Allegri’s second spell at the helm was less successful and was marred by a financial scandal in which Juventus were deducted 10 points near the end of the 2022-23 season in a case focused on their transfer dealings.

After qualifying for the third-tier Europa Conference League playoffs instead of their more familiar Champions League, Juve were later denied participation in any European competitions over breaches of UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play rules.

Soccer-Man City game was my worst experience in football, says Postecoglou

Soccer-Man City game was my worst experience in football, says Postecoglou

LONDON (Reuters) – Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou said he suffered cold sweats before Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat by Manchester City for fear of having his integrity questioned.

The build-up to the game was dominated by talk of Tottenham fans wanting their team to lose in order to put a huge dent in arch-rivals Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.

Had Tottenham avoided defeat, Arsenal would have needed just a win on Sunday against Everton to win the title but now City will clinch it if they beat West Ham United.

Postecoglou was emotional after the game and caused a stir when he appeared to criticise the home fans and suggested he was “out of step” with their feelings about Arsenal.

He also spoke of the club’s fragile foundations.

After a few days to let the dust settle, Postecoglou was asked again about Tuesday’s match ahead of Tottenham’s final game of the season at relegated Sheffield United when a draw will ensure they end the campaign in fifth place.

“I will try to explain it this way, that is probably the worst experience I’ve had as a football manager in a game because once I realised that I got it wrong in terms of what the atmosphere was going to be like and what people felt,” the Australian told reporters.

“I got a real anxiety within me of what happens if Man City, who are the best team in the world and who were disposing teams quite easily in the lead up and scored 15/16 goals in the last four games, what if we play as well as we can but they beat us 5-0?

“I got in cold sweats thinking about people questioning my integrity and the people I work with.”

Postecoglou said he watched the game back in the days after the defeat, Tottenham’s fifth in six game.

“Even watching the game back, there was a comment somebody mentioned to me in commentary saying ‘Tottenham are having a real go here.’ You are laughing about it, but that is 26 years of my life,” he said. “If nothing else people should know about me, I love this game. I’m very principled.

“I would hate to think, as Manchester City could have done to us, we are on the end of a heavy defeat and people would be questioning whether I prepared the team. We know on social media that would have happened. 100 per cent.

“And I would be up here trying to defend myself. That’s why I was animated on the night. I don’t think anyone will say that we didn’t make Man City earn that win the other night.”
